Do you have single 6-volt batteries (6 volts) or two 6-volt batteries in series (12 volts)? Normally the truck alternator will provide sufficient charge to get the batteries up to normal voltage (13.9 volts for 12-volt batteries). I've never heard of an over-charge caused by the truck alternator.
