Oh... thought it was about.. well, never mind..
Mixed emotions about this, I can see both sides, but if it slows someone down to get a ticket that may cause a death in the future by accident, I'm for the traffic stops..and tickets.

We may differ here, pineranch, but I hope there's a big difference from someone flashing a greeting which is a quick, one time occurrence and not repetitive, than someone who is continuously flashing as if I knew what they were flashing about.

Since I am mostly a law-abiding, non-excessive speed driving type of person, if someone flashes me it's either because I don't have my lights on when I should or I do have my lights on when I shouldn't or someone is acknowledging me (or knows me). I would not think this to mean there's a speed trap, and if there was and I was driving too fast, then I deserve what's coming to me.

I'm for freedom of expression, but probably less than most other persons who think I'm gonna be interested in what they are communicating. If this freedom of expressionist was flashing me like that, he'd better be having an emergency which is the final reason I'd expect from flashing like this. Otherwise warning me to obey the law when I already am is unnecessary and irritating and possibly impeding traffic if one tries to figure out what's it's all about. It's almost as bad as honking your horn for the other reasons mentioned already.

If this person thinks he's doing traffic a favor, just think if everyone did this. There would be flashing lights everywhere, all the time and every place and then nobody would care. Leave the speeders to law enforcement. Most of us aren't law enforcement and last I checked it's against the law to impersonate law enforcement, so leaving it to the law enforcement and their ticket books is just fine with me.

Having family in law enforcement, these members wish many of us civilians knew better about when to help and when they aren't helping. I think that's mostly the concern here and I'm sad to see law enforcement is thinking about backing down. I pay too much in taxes and insurance and I wish that cost would remain with the criminal element that is not following the laws made for everybody and not shared by everyone because they weren't caught.

The laws can be changed as the need arises, but you can't bring back the dead caused by someone disobeying the law. This is just my opinion. Raise your hand if you know someone that was killed by someone else not obeying the law. I hope I never have to raise my hand, but I personally know plenty of others with their hands raised.

I guess the moral of the story is not to warn against traffic cops by flashing your lights. Personally, if someone was speeding I think they should be caught. I’ve seen way too many speeders get by without being seen. On the other hand I would hate to be trying to flash at a Montana and it be taken wrong! Something to think about… hhhmmmmmmmmmm.

Since I only pull at 55 I'm constantly flashing my lights to let the semi's know it's ok to come back in my lane. Also since I pull at 55 I don't pay any attention to speed traps. I just hope I don't get a ticket in FL for warning of speed traps when I'm only trying to help the truckers change lanes safely!!

I was an LEO for thirty years on Long Island in NY. I always believed our job was to make the roads safer and stopping speeding was a way to do this. If a motorist does this by blinking his lights he's actually helping slow people down. This is sort of like parking an empty patrol car in an area to reduce speed. Issuing tickets shouldn't be the goal. Making the roads safer for everyone should be. The worst offenders will get caught sooner or later anyway.

What is next for the FL highway patrol, are they going to go after every trucker on the CB giving their location? This guy is actually helping the LEO slow people down. The perception is that the community I live in is a speed trap because they always see our PD with somebody pulled over and working radar. In reality on 20% of traffic stops result in a citation. So 4 out of 5 are just given a verbal warning. But what is so effective is the number of cars that pass as the vehicle is pulled over and think that guy is getting a ticket and it changes their driving behavior.

As self absorbed as most drivers are these days, even with this guys warning people of the presence of a cop, he is not making the cops job any more difficult.

That's the way I see it. The local LEOs park empty cars along the highway often. Are they breaking the law also?

Hey Ozz, you're retired. Tipping 30% makes the rest of us retirees look cheap.

Ha! Well, I think they set me up for the tip. I was talking with the shop owner about the local economy, she stated that the local Plastics company cut 2 shifts and 2 very large Casinos and a convention center shut down. I was feeling so sorry for them, I almost took them home to feed them.

I first will state that I try and obey traffic laws. Then I will admit that sometimes I look down at the speedometer and realize I am speeding. When driving I focus on the road and the traffic around me more than the instrument cluster. When I pull the Montana I purposefully try and drive about 5 miles under the speed limit. This isn't so much because of fear of getting a ticket as fear that I might run over someone due to the fat that my stopping distance is much greater with the Monty in tow. Flashing slows people down and that's what the LEO is put out on the road for, not just to be puntitive. I've had a number of friends in law enforcement down through the years and have ridden with them in their personal vehicles. Not one of them paid any attention to speed limits. One of them was a game warden and he was stopped by highway patrol when I was riding with him. He came back to the vehicle laughing after talking with the highway patrolman. Needless to say he didn't get a ticket. I may be in the minority here but I find it a bit hypocritical for LEO to enforce laws against others which they don't obey themselves. That is one of the greatest things wrong with this country today. People who are in power miss-using their authority against others. There used to be a judge in Memphis Tennessee whose picture would end up in the paper at least once a year after he was caught driving drunk. It was always thrown out when he went to court.

Dave, good post. I agree about the double standard, and I don't like it much either.
