New York, New York
Will be visiting "The Big Apple" in August (5-20). Having a little difficulty finding a CG in the area that does not cost an arm and leg, nor involves driving thru the city, nor is more than an hour away, nor is a campers nightmare (we use RV Park Reviews.com to check out parks). Would like FHU's with sewer. I know we have some MOC'ers living in New York or New Jersey, Any suggestions from anyone?????? Thanks in advance.....

I can't help you with CG's close to NYC but I can tell you, DON'T drive into the city with the trailer. Tight, overcrowded streets, low tunnels no parking and a hundred other obsticles. You'll have to wait until 3 AM to get back out with a police escort. I've taken just the duelly through Manhattan a couple of times and that was an adventure. Find a CG that has transportation into the city and leave the truck at home. My guess is that you will probably be 30 to 60 minutes from the city. Expect to pay $$$ since you'll be close to the city.
It's still worth the trip, though.

Yep - like Jim said - I noticed 9 ft clearance on bridges when I was out there on business. There has to be more to navigation out there than I can imagine, just for truckers or delivery trucks.

We are also planning on spending time in NYC -- only early in June and a friend of ours recommended a CG called Liberty Harbor RV Park. Kind of by where the plane went down on the river so as you'll need the ferry to get into Manhattan.

That's for sure the closest, rates about $60. Here is a web site:
http://www.trailerlifedirectory.com/...cgid=960000890
Move out about 45 miles west on I-80 and there are several choices in the $40 range. Examples: Green Valley Beach, Panther Lake RV Resort, Fla-Not RV Park (near Flanders, N.J.)

We stayed at a KOA about 75 miles north of the city right near the cadet school and they have a bus that picked us up and took us to all the tourist attactions including the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building, ground zero, Wall St. and so much more. It was some of the best tourist dollars we spent. The next day we took the train ourselves and did all the things we didn't have enough time at the day before. Can't remember the name of the KOA but it is advertised as the closest KOA
campground to Manhatten. It was great but then, we didn't know Steve an Betty (Steves) at that time.

That KOA is in Platekill, NY (Newburgh). Near the Hudson River and all the historical attractions there.

Well, We have decided on the KOA in Plattekill and maybe the RPI Park in Roundout (?), they don't make advance reservations so may end up staying at KOA for several weeks. I want to thank everyone for their advice, I almost feel guilty for using everyone for travel agents, but I would gladly return the favor if'n the need arises. Again, thank you from the bottom of my heart.....

Phil,
When you make your reservation tell them you don't want to be in the gravel lot in back - you want to be sure to be in a separate site in the wooded area. You might request not to be by the playground, it gets loud on the week-ends.

Hi, we stayed at Liberty Harbor Marina and RV park Sept '08. Its a flat gravel parking lot with water and electricity, one dumping station. Laundry and showers aren't that bad. There is a bar/nightclub on the premises only 50 yards from RV parking, so it can get noisy late at night. Some of their ads say they have wi-fi.....not when we were there they didn't. There is a NY Waterway Ferry Terminal on site, and a subway station a 2 minute walk away. There is some grass close by for pet walking etc.
IMHO a so-so place to stay if you plan on long day trips, bur not where you would want to hang around at.
Peter
