Pointless Fun Winter Pic

Guess it is supposed to be Spring everywhere, but here in SE ND Winter still has a grip on us... 6" of snow a couple of days ago, and a total of near 60" this winter. I think officially 20" on the ground, and we have not been over 40º in over 135 days.

Anyway, I was just out for an hour and a half moving some of the "spring" with my snowblower to get it away from my buildings for the hopefully soon to come melting and I decided to check the roof of my '04 Montana. I shovel it every so often, and when I finally dug my way to the ladder I noticed some ice on the back corner!

Never understood the wisdom of putting the 50A connection where they did. Condensate from the rear A/C drips right on top of it every time I run it. Was always going to move it, but have never gotten it done yet.

The attached photos illustrate my point better than any picture taken in the summer could! BTW... The rig is plugged in only for the smart battery converter/charger. All of the other breakers are shut off.

Could you imagine what it's like at the end of the road?

I’ve had my new tomato plants in the ground for 3 weeks. I did have to cover them last weekend for possible frost.

But by mid to late June while you are enjoying nice weather we’ll be hitting highs near or over 100 and no rain and those same plants will be withering.

We had a relatively mild winter. Did drop to near single digits in Dec and mid teens in Jan but otherwise not much. Only 21 total freezes which is much below average. But had a hotter and drier than average last summer with 47 days over 100 and little rain July thru October. Hope we don’t have a repeat.

I’ve noticed a change in our weather over the last 70 years. 70 years ago our frost free date was May 10 now we are usually safe April 20. We always got 2 good hay cutting. Now it’s one then wait until fall for another. Our garden didn’t need to be watered. Now you can’t grow a garden without watering.
The weather or is it climate has changed. It’s too early to know for sure. We will haft to wait another few decades to know for sure but things are changing all over the country.

Weather seems to be colder, later around here the last few years. Driving truck for going on 42 years in the midwest I have always looked forward to (what I consider) "Safe Dates". That would be the last time of the year I worry about driving on lousy roads. I used to consider that April 8th for many years, but the last couple I have been burned up to April 10 and 11.

I moved it up to April 15th now. Last year I was stuck overnight in Bismarck, ND on April 11 because of a blizzard. It had been in the 50's and 60's the week before! Almost there this year!

Only one winter left and I am out of here in the winter time! I don't want to wish my life away, but I am sure ready to be done driving for a living!

In central Indiana it's been raining for days and days now. It's been a slow, constant steady misty sprinkle with an occasional actual rain. All this water is catching up with us at the house.

We live in the country. The closest "river" is more than 10 miles away. There are some creeks, mostly drainage from all the fields but nothing close to us. So, while some folks are still enjoying snow, this is what we are now enjoying!

I took this standing at my front door of the hosue just a few minutes ago:

The ground is so saturated with water right now, the water table is so high, that even this little guy can't live under ground any longer. He came up yesterday. I have never seen one of these where we live. Again, we are not anywhere close to a river, lake, stream, or pond (except for the pond in our front yard right now).

I guess he had to come up for air!

Of course our climate is changing! It didn't start in just the last 20-30 years. All the paranoia because they look at temps starting about 150 years ago. Just so happens that was the coldest period in the last many centuries. It paints a very biased view of the climate.

I remember having the hell scared out of me when I was in elementary school and the "Weekly Reader" warned of the looming freeze over. They were telling us we would be in a new ice age by the turn of the century!

Weather is cyclical. There are warm periods and cold periods. I guess thats why there are averages!

Anyway, I just thought it was an interesting situation how the snow melting on the roof of the Monte ran right down my rain gutter and extended down spout and made a solid block of ice encasing my 50A connection! I love photo ops!

For that rain gutter...
Maybe add a drip extension so it runs further away from the rig?
On the other hand, ice is heavy and it could just brake off your gutter.

The extension is where the dripping is coming from. I was going to chip the ice off but it’s frozen to the side of the rig so I opted to let it melt off in the next week or so. It’s 100% shade right there.

Ice is thinnest near the gutter extension so hopefully it leaves that in place!.

I do agree that is a lousy place to put the electric plug. You can't move the plug, but maybe you can do something with the gutter.

You might be able to extend it further, past the plug with something like this: click here

Or something like this: click here.

I remember when I was in high school in the early sixties our science teacher said we were headed for maybe an ice age. Then in the seventies Exxon scientist discovered we were actually making the climate warmer. They got it surprisingly right, within a very few tens of a degree. Of course Exxon kept this secret until they were forced to declare it. Since the sixties and seventies scientists have learned how to read temperatures back thousands of years very accurately.

We also live in the edge of the country, no nearby creeks or streams, and 2-3 years ago we had an abnormally wet spring and early summer. And had some of those guys show up in our yard. First and only time in 38 years living here that they have appeared. They are common in area wetlands, just never made it this far out of them.

For what it's worth, they moved the plug receptacle around the corner in '05 and it is on the back side. Hope it thaws out up there soon. I need to make a trip to Bismarck and north. Would like to bring the Montana.

Sure glad we live in Oregon. Had a mild winter, some light snow, not much rain and definately waiting for spring. We are 50 miles from ocean and 80 miles from central Oregon and a little more to desert landscape if you like mountain lakes and hiking. Wouldn't trade for northern US or the east coast during the winter. No hurricanes or tornados. Forest fires the last couple of years.
