Where do you get your filters

Thought I would start a thread on the diesel filters (fuel and oil, even tranny if you like). Where do you buy? Anyone have a better place; price? You Ford and Dodge guys (and gals) pitch in your 2 cents worth too if you like.

I buy OEM filters only. AC Delco oil filter from Auto Zone; $7.99 plus tax. AC Delco fuel filter; I buy through a friend in East TX, but GM Parts Direct has just as good a price. Around $25 plus shipping. If you buy a few this is looks to be a pretty good deal. Tranny external filter from Allison dealer for 10 - 12 bucks. I've found you need to take the part number to the Allison dealer. They stock the filters, but don't list the Light Truck applications.

I am running Donaldson filters for the oil and fuel. I get them at Napa. The oil filter is more then a normal filter, it take almost teo quarts of oil to pre-fill it. The air filter is very good. It is quite larger than the stock filter. After a air filter change, the outside was dirty, but the inside looked brand new.

My oil filters are from Ford; get them when I change oil. Don't do any by myself any more. Too much work.

Gotta agree with Orv. I take my GMC to a GMC dealer. As a younster I always changed my own but at this time in life I have a lot better things to do than crawling under the hood and under the truck. I use the waitng time to walk the dealers lot and dream of my next truck.

Gladly pay more at the dealer. Had the oil and filter changed, spinoff tranny filter changed, and tires rotated and it set me back $166. I am not complaining, as it was worth that much to me!!

We use OEM from the dealers. Have not had any problems for over a 160,000 miles.

I am fortunate in that I have Jose in Kissimmee. He was a GM mechanic for 7 years (diesel) before him and his buddy spun off their own business.

No offense to those of you who let others change your fluids, but I'm no where near being disabled yet ... Ha! Change all my own and take the used oil to Autozone or OReilly's for a free dump. I have a 7.3 so oil filters are readily available at Wally World. I get OEM Motorcraft fuel filters and Donnelson air filters in bulk off EBay and split the cost with friends.

Oh to be young again and in need of money! I still need money, but I have enough to pay for the oil change at the dealer. I was using a service garage and it was costing me right at $100 for oil and filter change. They could not schedule me in the last time so I had it done at the ford dealer. $69 - guess where I'll be going from now on. The dealers are in competition with the other service shops so shop around. Personally, I'm worth more than they get for an oil change. Let's see, I have to get a pan, I have to get on my back, I have to pop the oil drain, then I have to find a place to dispose of the oil (Can't do it down the drain anymore!) Let's see, for me that is about 2 hours or more work. The dealer can get it out in 20 minutes, and if I leave it they like that better.

Besides - warranty, warranty, warranty. If something should go wrong, are they not responsible?

Used to change my own when I had a stick house and my own property. But since I now fulltime I let Ford do all of it. I haven't found any campgrounds that will let you jack it up and do any fluid changes. I'm not to old but can make more carving a bird !

www.fleetfilter.com

Napa Gold filters in the box - about half the price of Napa retail.

Let Dodge dealer do LOF changes -- Chrysler has a program where you can buy 'bulk' oil changes and costs anywhere from 30 to 50 percent what it does one at a time -- of course that is if you use all the oil changes. If not -- they don't give you any refunds on the unused changes. Wife's car has same program but her's (Lexus dealer) does refund the unused services.....

mtofell,
I ordered from fleetfilter.com and the fuel filter was about $9.00 cheaper than local auto-zone. The filter was a Napa Gold made by Wix. Next time I will order more filters at one time in order to save on the shipping. Thanks for the web-site.

I second Geno's garage and Napa. Geno's sells Fleetguard and Napa made by Wix. Both good filters.

I use Geno's garage. Good prices and fast delivery. Buy my own filters and oil, take everything to a local auto shop, they change the oil, filter, and lube - $14.00. Don't have to get rid of the old oil, don't get dirty, and only takes 20 to 30 minutes. Kerry

That sounds like a good deal! I did that once with my GM dealer. I took 3 gallons of synthetic oil for a ten quart change. You guessed it. The dumba$$ that changed my oil put it all in it. Never used them again.

Try and buy OE Delco when I can, or use CarQuest alot which is Wix. There is definitely a difference in quality of some of the aftermarket stuff. Not a big Fram fan. Just my opinion.
I work in the auto industry, so usually find some customers who will help me get wholesale pricing when I'm going through the course of my business.

Since my truck is under the 100k warranty, I use only OEM filters...get the oil from Auto Zone, the fuel from GM and the Allison from an Allison dealer...they are the cheapest in my area.

I change all those fluids myself...I like to do it, and I don't like to rely on the competency of the dealer's personnel.
