Looking to add a 100lbs propane tank

2019 Montana High Country 331RL

We are full time in our RV and as everyone knows it has been a bit chilly lately! The two 30lbs propane tank setup is great, but I have to trek the 60 miles, round trip, to have them refilled every 2 weeks. I have a 100lb propane tank but up to now haven't considered linking it into the propane system of the RV.

Main question...

I have an extension hose to give me enough slack to get out of the propane tank bay safely as well as the fittings (pipe and flare) to connect it. I was thinking about adding a T fitting on the 1/4 inch bib where the current pigtail enters the bay so I can attach the current pigtail to one side and connect it to the 30 lbs tank, and then run the extension hose off the other side and to the 100lb tank. I have a high pressure regulator to put at the end of the extension hose, just before the connection to the 100lbs tank.

Will this keep the pressure up in the system or am I going to run into vapor lock issues? Thoughts?

D

Several years ago, due some surgeries, we were staying where we expected cold and snow. I contacted a local propane supplier and they delivered a 100 gallon tank, had a red regulator on it and connected about a ten foot hose directly to one side of the auto switching regulator in place of a pigtail. We used that for over a year, and could have it filled whenever the level got low on the gauge. The propane cost was higher than if I went down with one of the cylinders, but that was ok with me as we were recovering from our joint replacements.

This is part of my point - I'd like to add the 100lbs tank to the system, not replace one of the existing 30lbs tanks. I'm curious if anyone has done so and whether or not it has caused any issues.

We do it every winter for the last four years, but I go to the connection where the cross over valve feeds the rig and connect it there. Until we move, the 30# bottles aren't commected at all.

We have a big horizontal tank with about 20' hose hooked up DOWNSTREAM of the crossover regulator on the T that would have fed the generator. I installed a 1/2" shutoff valve and the hose has swivel connection. The tank has it's own regulator.

We can disconnect in about 30 seconds and roll away ready to camp elsewhere (without the big tank of course). This is hands down the best way to hook up a large exterior tank supply.

I added the 100 lbs tank by adding a tee at the point the right side tank went into the propane system. Photo attached shows what I did. Working great so far. The existing pigtail is connected to the right of the tee and the new regulator and extension hose are on the left. The hose runs behind the 30 lbs tank in the bay to outside the RV and connects to the 100 lbs tank, which sits under the 5th wheel area. When in transit the hose rolls up and I zip tie it to one of the holes in the handle of the 30 lbs tank. The hose and extra regulator were the expensive parts, but overall the total cost was about $60. A link where I bought the regulator and hose are included below.

Parts list:

1 - 1/4" pipe thread black galvanized tee
2 - 1/4" pipe thread black galvanized coupler
1 - 3/8" flare union
3 - 1/4" pipe thread to 3/8" flare adapter
1 - HP regulator https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
1 - 12' propane extension hose w/ 3/8" flare fittings https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

and a bunch of telfon tape and pipe compound to make sure it doesn't leak!

Apologies for the orientation of the photo... I tried 10 times to get it correct but no luck. The two red regulators are the top of the pic.
