New member with a question

We recently bought an older (2005) Montana, it is a 2980RL.

This unit still has the problematic remote control thermostat system.

I have found this thread about the system, http://www.montanaowners.com/forums/...ead.php?t=8145 and also found that Amazon has the parts listed as being needed by one of the folks who upgraded to the newer CCC system.

Questions is how do I be sure if the parts listed in this post from the old thread are the correct ones for our rig??

Do I need to verify the brand/model number of the A/C unit or were all of the them equipped with the same A/C and remote thermostats?

Parts I think are needed are https://www.amazon.com/Dometic-31092...s%2C202&sr=8-2 and https://www.amazon.com/Dometic-31092...FJ4Z2SZ43WXWTZ

Having had a 2005 2955RL with the POS Remote Thermostat, this was the bible Thread on replacement. The part number are correct for your 2005. Now has Dometic changed them in the past 15 years is a question I would ask them.

That is my big concern......

Also, I wonder if the Montana folks used the same A/C units for all models that year or do I need a specific brain box for each potential model of A/C??

I don't recall there being AC choices. Everybody got the same Dometic (I am pretty sure).

OK, sounds good. I will call and make sure.

Another question-------is there a battery shut off switch, and if so, where do I find it?

Considering you had the same year, any quirks I should know about??

No battery cutoff unless you add one (better than the current system). After getting the initial bugs worked out, ours was no problem. The one thing to think about is the 29xx series came with 5280 lbs axles. They are a little light in IMO. I replaced them with 7K axles tubes (left the same springs) which are thicker walled and a the same spindle dimensions.

You might PM H20jockey as he has a 2005 29xx just in case he doesn't see this post.

Thanks once more for the reply.

Funny about the axles-----my data plate says the gross weight is 12,430. Well above what the axles you listed should carry. I need to see if I can find info about the axles themselves.

I had a 2006 2980. Some info for you. My loaded gross wt was 20900 and truck wt loaded was 10450 (over wt).

There are other posts on these subjects, but my first thing would be to get TPMS to make sure tires don't blow. Then get a surge protector of some kind. I had surge guard, but switched to Progressive as it had a life time warranty - but I think maybe Surge guard may have this now. On my pre surge guard I hooked to a way overloaded system at a park in Neb. in mid summer. Voltage dropped low and blew out my A/C and something else (can't remember). These monitors stop many types of problems for many reasons and are worth the money.
Driving home in summer from Nebraska without A/C is not fun and motels are expensive!!!!

Tom, thanks for the input.

I blew a tire on our old Titanium a few years back, down in your neck of the woods-----bit east of Gila Bend. No fun at all--------70 or so mph at the time.

Yep on the surge protector for sure, need to add that to the list of accessories. Had them before------this is our third fifth wheel.

I notice your profile lists Bridge as an interest----do you run into many players when out camping?? Wife and thought about putting an ACBL sticker on the rig to see if we could generate a game or two.

We have a 2005 2955 RL since new. Never heard of this “remote” issue. Enlighten me?

Axles

Mike. This thread is wandering off a little from the OP but I have a 2007RL Montana and found the serial number of the axles in the middle at the back of the rear axle. See the PDF file below. I then contacted Dexter and they gave me more info than I needed about my axles and springs.

Mike, i have 2005 2955rl, last year on the first leg of a 3 month trip out west my ac stopped working. After troubleshooting without any results i replaced the controller and thermostat (i believe the ones you have showing at amazon are correct). Make sure that those units are the problem, after i replaced mine it did not work, it turned out it was the phone line was bad that connected the controller to the thermostat. put in a new line everything was working
