Leveling and Tires

I have been successfully using Anderson 3604 leveling wedges since 2016. Like them because they are easy to use and provide precise height adjustment.

Recently upgraded to Transeagle all steel load range G tires (Sailun knock offs). The wedges are 6 inches wide, and the tread on the new tires is about 7 inches wide, so when I use the wedges centered on the tire, about 1/2 inch of outside edge of tires on both sides are not supported.

Is this a problem? I can't find wider wedges, and lego type blocks are a PITA to use.

Appreciate the forums wisdom on the subject.

I've never seen that at a problem. I use a different brand but the same style of leveler. Do you have auto levelers on your rig? My levelers tend to take some weight off of the tires anyway.

My rig is a 2002, so no auto levelers. Entire weight on the side being leveled goes through the tire to the wedge.

I never liked using a board more narrow than the tire. Also never liked a tire on the edge of a board. I avoided both scenarios. It may not harm the tire for short periods but I can't help thinking it is hard on the belts of the tire. I think its much better to have the entire width of tire sharing the load equally as designed.

I would get a wider leveler or go back to boards if it were me.

The sidewalls on these tires are quite thick and stout. I'd be surprised if there is any compromise to the tire with only 1/2" on each side overhanging. I've parked on 2x6 (5 1/2" width) boards for years in various settings without seeing any issues.

half and inch over while stationary would not concern me. Knockoffs going down the road is another story.

You could buy one more leveler wedge, slice it in half lengthwise and glue one piece to each of your existing levelers. You might be able to screw or bolt them together as well.

I actually tried to do that exact thing. Ordered a new one. When it arrived I compared it to one of my old ones. They changed the mold and the new one has a slightly different radius, so it does not match up. I took one to a plastics store to get glue, and the plastic they are made from will not glue well. If I bolted them together, they don't match. I would have to buy 2 new ones and make 2 out of 4. Also concerned about compromising the strength since there is a one inch support spine that runs through the center. Strength would be compromised.

These tires are constructed exactly like Sailuns except they have a higher (81 mph) speed rating (not that I'd ever go that fast towing). Purchased them from a wholesale distributor that I used to deal with. $50 less than Sailun per tire. I'll let you know how they perform over time.

“On RVs without built-in leveling devices, it is customary to “block” the low wheel positions. Care must be taken to ensure that the tires are fully supported when using blocks. The load on the tire must be evenly distributed on the block and in the case of duals, evenly distributed on blocks for both tires. If this isn’t done properly, sidewall casing cables may be damaged, which may lead to premature sidewall fatigue and ultimate tire failure. Refer to Figure 26 for blocking methods for RVs.

Sent the question to Etrailer.com, where I purchased the Anderson Ramps. Here's the response:

Expert Reply:
After speaking to the manufacturer, part # AM3604 works for your application. That is the maximum amount you would want hanging off of each side.

The answer I gave you was a tire industry answer. In your situation I'm pretty sure they are the experts.

I'll stick with Sailun tires. Anything Transgender cannot be normal.
