Adding speaker cubes

Seems to me that with the stereo speakers situated behind me while I sit on the couch and directed to the other side of the camper, I'm not getting a full response from them. I thought about adding a set of Bose-like cubes and attaching them inside the couch slide out and pointing them back towards the couch. This should increase the amount of sound I'm getting. Has anybody done this and if so, how did you do it? Did you just wire in to the existing speakers? Can I do the same in the bedroom, although the loss of sound there is not as bad because the speakers are pointed down towards the bed.
