Tanksgiving travel

Did you know that the day before Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day OF THE YEAR.** You might have thought The Christmas Holiday but not so. Today is Known as "Black Wednesday" in Air Traffic Control. Helen and I have worked many of them and it is usually a nightmare as any glitch in the system, not matter how small can cause huge delays.

Not so this year and this is a good indicator of how bad the economy is. The only delays are at Newark (EWR) Due to weather and winds , JFK due to the delays at Newark and Phoenix(PHX) due to low visibility and these delays are under 30 Mins. Everyhing else is green
You can track conditions here.

It is 1pm EST..should be peak traffic now and it is a below average normal day. We are watching this with great interest as it is a significant indicator of the weak economy.

** On edit..That should have said At our facility. Due to its geographic location traffic to and from East Coast airspace as well as Chicago, Wahington and Atlanta travel througgh Cleveland ARTCC airspace making that day the highest traffic day.

All those that are not traveling by air this year must have change to traveling by RV and cars. The traffic has already picked up on the roads in Calif and it's not even noon yet. Maybe its the extra charges for luggage, meals, peanuts and drinks including water. Just think you can travel in your RV and have all those conveniences at no extra charge.

Also - Airlines report only a 10% decrease in travelers and they have reduced the number of aircraft they are using. So we have less aircraft in the traffic pattern and still delays at the airports.

They has also been a report of increase in rail travel this weekend. Maybe this is the 10% the airlines lost.

Rich,
Saw local rep. from BWI that said this is not the busiest day. Many travel earlier in the week, etc. That will be Sunday when everyone comes home!!! Glad we're just going up the road tomorrow. NJ on Friday. See Steves (MOC)and Betty Sunday, and drive back home Monday.

"The day the FAA stopped the world"

A different look at 9/11. Helen was on duty that fateful day at Cleveland Air route Traffic Control Center and saw the events unfold before her eyes.
