Shakedown trip completed.
1/3 tank fresh water, all our gear full of fuel.
Pickup is a 2012 F-350 4WD srw 6.7 diesel
Trailer is a 2016 3610
Weights while towing
Pickup towing wt 12,100
Trailer axles weight 10,300
Combination total 22,400
Trailer total weight 13,650
----------------------------------------
Pickup empty weight 8750.
Hitch weight 3,350(24.5%)
Pulls great.
Pin weight probably right with 4 6v batteries and all my crap in the storage bay.

Not sure how you are doing your calculations, but there is no way a pin weight of 40% of your trailer weight is correct?

IMO, you might be calculating heavy. I weighed the rear axle of my truck hitched and subtracted the rear axle weight empty to get my actual pin weight. Mine was 2920# with a total GCVW of 22,300#.

Stolen from the Ford VIN decoder site on my specific truck.
Looks like I'm 1100 under the combined rating and around 100 lbs over the hitch recommendation,and 600 overall truck weight, not buying a new truck for that.

For a 16000# trailer, the pin pressure on the hitch would be 3200# max as the pin weight should fall between 10-20%. Soooo, I can only say that you would have to be way nose low to get up to 4000#. john

I am guessing where the problem is coming in here is that you did not weigh your truck without the Montana hooked to it. You can't go by stickers or weights for your 2012 F350 that come off the internet. Weigh your truck when it is full of fuel and ready for towing, record your steer axle, drive axle, and total weight. Then you can properly figure everything else.
The weights you gave originally after weighing your combination are pretty spot on compared to what mine have been.

JandC you were right. I went up and weighed just the pickup yesterday, and ended up 8750.See my edit on post 1

My last three 5ers were 22.5% - 24.1% - my current one is 21.6 and those are all on the CAT scales. I don't think you will find many 5ers over 10,000 will less than 20%. Travel Trailers run from 10 to 15% with 12% being about right and the recommended 5er percentage is between 15% and 25%.

Total trailer weight = 13,650
A pin weight of 3,350 Lbs is about 24% just about right.
The 2012 F350 has a about 2,000 lb higher weight rating than the older trucks.
I would say he is below the GCW rating but should check his rear axle weight rating, the tire weight ratings and the front axle weight verses front axle weight and tire ratings.
Compare to the trailer weight rating I am not sure the trailer scale weights are correct.
I know our trailer is rated at 15,909 Lbs and the truck at 23,500 Lbs I can only load the trailer to 15,300 without exceeding any of the weight ratings.

How do most of you go about getting your weights? I have only weighed hooked up. I am planning on finding out my pin weight this year when we get all stocked up again, but I was wondering if there is some combination to do without having to unhook? I planned on weighing everything, then moving out of the way and unhooking then weighing just the truck. Is that what has to be done?

If you are interested in your pin weight you will need to know the weight of you truck ready to camp and the 5er ready to camp and truck together. I use a older truck weight but I weight once a year to insure that I'm under GVWR, Axle, combine ratins and Tire ratings.
I'm in the camp that thinks that few pounds won't break the truck in half but I'm also in the camp of not wanting to exceed truck specs due to lot lawyers are now starting to advertise for lawsuits against RVers. I fund most my retirement and don't want someone else to enjoy the fruits of my work.

This is taken from the VIN decoder for my pickup, from Ford..
Curb Weight - Front 4703.0 max
Curb Weight - Rear 3092.0 max
Now add a full fuel tank, 2 adults,a 5th wheel hitch and my misc. things I carry it looks like the 8750 number is right seems to me?
P.S it is a 6.7 diesel).
