Need Help with Laminate Install ...

We are attempting to install laminate flooring in our 2005 2955. We are inexperienced in flooring and need some help from someone who has installed laminate.

The transition strip we bought, or "reducer" strip, is not wide enough to cover the gap between the slide and the kitchen floor when the slide is out. You can still see the white plastic ramp the slide rolls on! How can we close the gap? Did we buy the wrong strip?

Any help is greatly appreciated and is better than none. Thanks in advance. We took photos but don't know how to post them.

Are you putting the laminate on the slide out floor also?

Now I understand!! We did not put laminate on slideout. The slideout on ours raised up high enough to slideover the woodfloor.

Thanks for the replies. We're talking about the transition between the slide and the kitchen floor when the slide is out.

The problem is that when the slide is out all the way, the reducer strip doesn't meet the kitchen floor, there is a gap of about 1 1/2 inches.

Has anyone had this problem? Is there even a fix for it? We may have to put carpet back in the slideout.

Mike, I have been considering the laminate. I just can't figure a way to come up with anything for that "apron" or whatever you call it. There is an older HitchHiker here in our park that the owner claims to have put laminate of the slide floor also, but I've never had the opportunity to view it. Perhaps someone else has done this, and will chime in.

Mike,

We put laminate in our TT but did not remove the carpet from the slide. I couldn't come up with anyway to cover the transition. Here's a link to our laminate install: http://www.geocities.com/fulltimedre...4/lam_flr.html

hey mike, when we put laminate in ours, we took out the ugly slide carpet and used it as a pattern. went to a carpet store and picked out a good indoor/outdoor carpet, had a new binding sewed on, and the carpet flap covers the space like the old did. worked out great for us.dave.

That is what we have just done... Picked out carpet from Home Depot and they will put the binding on and we will install ourselves. Will have the carpet overhang about 4 inches past the slide floor to cover the gap. Problem solved! Thanks for the input.

fulltimedreamer,
I have been wanting to do the laminate thing to our Mountaineer as well. I have a couple of questions for you before I start.
1. How did you handle the transition under the slide?
2. How did you make the transition into the bathroom?
3. How did you make the transition at the entry door threshold (the metal part at the bottom)? I viewed the pictures in your link and the rig looks wonderful. Any pictures you have to go along with the answers to the questions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

When you pulled the carpet from the slide; did you have to pull the trim fascia off? I noticed that our carpet is turned up between that trim and that outer fascia that flanges against the wall. That trim looks like engineered wood (particle board)with contact paper on it to me. I would be afraid it might come apart if removed. If I were at the home base, I would pull it, chunk it, and replace it with real wood.

No, did not have to pull off the trim, just yanked and pulled the carpet out from under it and cleaned up that area. Yes, trim is made out of something fake, not real wood, which would be nice to put in some time.

Jack,

Sorry I haven't been on for a day or two.

1. I left the slide carpet in place. There is a 1/4" gap between the edge of the laminate and the slide molding.
2. I used a standard transition molding available at Home Depot.
3. I removed the thin piece of aluminum that goes from the threshold down to the old vinyl flooring. There is about a 3/16" gap between the laminate and the threshold. It is hardly noticebale and I vacuum any grit that gets in there once in a while.

Thanks for the compliment.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info Lamar. This will be my next big project for the rig. I will let you know how things work out and take some photos along the way. Thanks again.
