Summer Trip

The wife and I are not yet retired but thinking about a 2-3 week summer trip. We would be traveling from the Atlanta area and a few of our ideas on a destination would be The Black Hills, Michigan UP, Maine or something else. We understand that we can't hit all of those in 2-3 weeks, but just looking for ideas on some of your adventures in those areas. We are not in a hurry to get there or return so some other fun destinations along the way is appreciated.

It’s not the destination, but the trip that makes owning a RV fun

Custer State Park in South Dakota, not far from Mount Rushmore, is very scenic. Don't miss the Needles Highway in that area. Badlands National Park is interesting.

I'm not sure what you mean by "go to interior to the 'smoking' bar". When I look up Interior, SD and search for 'smoking' bar, I get nothing special other than what you would expect. Can you elaborate a bit.

I love South Dakota. I( have been there twice. Beautiful country. There are many things to do there, even explore some caves. Make your wife happy and get some Black Hills Gold. LOL
Mount Rushmore is cool. You have to go at night. They light it up. The ranger has a introduction before they turn on the lights. Little Big Horn is also there. It's privetly owned so the fee is more.

If you go to Michigan than Mackinaw Island is a must see. Beautiful country in the summer. They sell chocolate there LOL. Dont bother to go inside the fancy hotel there. Big waste of money. We did take a ride on a horse drawn carnage while on the island. You have to ride a ferry to the island no cars allowed just horses. LOL
Dearborn Michigan is a cool place. Check out the Henry Ford Museum. It was way more than a bunch of cars, but they have those also LOL. You could also take a tour of the Ford factory where they build the F150 That was cool also.

We are also fans of South Dakota and Custer SP. I think The Bone is referring to the Crazy Horse Monument and not Little Big Horn. Little Big Horn is located in Montana and Crazy Horse is near Mount Rushmore. We could easily spend two or three weeks at Custer and the surrounding area (come to think of it, we have) and still have not seen all we wanted to. We do keep going back though.

been there!

Have not been to Michigan but have been to SD and to Maine...my choice would be SD...lots to see and do. But for me the driving force in the decision would be it is less congested. Sure the tourist areas are always a challenge but the northeast is full of small town after small town, traffic, and to me, just feels crowded. I prefer the central and west part of the country, love the mountains, so most of my vacations are north and west of Texas....SD is a great time.
be safe

Crazy Horse is correct. It has been a few years since I saw Crazy Horse. There was a lot done last time I was there. i need to go back to see the progress.

we are a quick 2 day drive to the badlands and black hills of SD, our kids just loved it growing up, every other year we went. Gotta do Wall Drug, the KOA in Interior is a great stay in the badlands, Custer Gulch is the best in the black hills, large sites, right at the entrance to Custer State Park, as others have said, it is wonderful, if you hike, you have to hit Sunday Gulch Trail

I’ll second Custer SP. it’s well worth seeing. There is a beautiful drive through the park, large rock formations and a tunnel I thought I couldn’t get my truck through until I saw a Greyhound bus go through. I was sure it was stuck in there until it moved.

If you haven't been to Mackinaw Island you probably missed the point of the 'chocolate' reference. There are something like 23 candy stores and if I recall correctly, 28 taverns on the island!!!

Definitely S.Dak! Our first time there I booked for 4 days. We stayed an extra 2 and would go back anytime. Still didn't get to see everything I wanted to. We stayed in Deadwood. Convenient location to everything.

If you go to the Michigan UP, Tahquamenon Falls is a must. It's been years for us, but Whitefish Point was also fun to see. The UP is actually beautiful no matter where you go

Planning our fall trip to upper peninsula as we speak. Using RV Parky for the first time, give it a try.

Funny as it may seem, Bear Cave in Michigan was interesting. It is a small cave in a deep wooded gulch that was used in the Underground Railroad in the past. Not fancy, but standing there, you can get a feeling for the people that used it. Maybe not for everyone but then we enjoy the smaller sights, like the world's largest ball of string, on our trips.

That sounds very interesting. I've lived in Michigan my entire life and never heard of it. Thanks for the tip - it's on my bucket list now!
