All of the crazy new rules and regulations of anything usually originates from California and trickles east eventually.

Not does only does it go east out of California but north also. In BC we have lots of those ideas travel up here such as if your trailer is over 10,000 lbs you must have an endorsement on your license.

In Manitoba we also have to upgrade class of license. Had to do a written and road test. Haven't had to do that since I was 16. What made it difficult was you are supposed to do the road test with a trailer over 10,000# but have to have someone with proper license drive your unit to the testing facility since I didn't have the proper license to drive such a large trailer. Kind of a catch 22.
Also need special insurance on my truck since it's GVWR is also over 10,000#.
No one tells you all these things when you start this journey.

We lived in CA for awhile - not a real user friendly place. Seemed like lots of laws and rules but fairly lax enforcement.

Weight alone will be seen as negligence. Might not work in a criminal trial but certainly will in a civil suit.

And my Canadian friends wonder why I don't travel north of the Mason Dixon line! No reason could ever be found to get me into California either. I'm just too old and ornery to play silly games so some places can extract more funds.

Don't be afraid of VISITING California. The special license laws don't apply to visitors. Only to the special people living in the state. The 55MPH speed limit while towing anything will apply though even to visitors.

Same in Canada, license laws only apply to the people who live there. In Saskatchewan, if your truck and trailer weighs more than 5,000 kgs. (11,023 lbs) then you must register the truck for a higher weight. My truck and trailer grossed out at 12,050 kgs. (26565 lbs) so legally I had to license my truck for that amount of weight. I licensed it for 13,000 kgs (28,660 lbs) as it was the same price for any weight between 12,001 kgs (26,458 lbs) to 13,000 kgs (28,660 lbs).

Cat Scale ticket
I have a 2018 F350 CCSB 4x4 6.7. I weighed it at the recycle center pretty much as it will be prior to loading 5th wheel. Probably add another 2 hundred lbs. misc stuff. Weighed in at 8500lb.
I have a 2008 Montana 3585SA GVWR 15575 including the 3412 of cargo. Pin weight was guestimated from factory at 2150. Scale calc puts me at about 2420.
My truck decal shows front axle max 5200, rear axle max 6780, total GVWR for truck is 11500.
I have airbags and they were set to 30lbs.
Looks like I still have some wiggle room. I need to look at moving some stuff around to reduce pin weight.

The published PW is at the Unloaded weight at the factory. No battery and nothing else. You will be much higher.....

Just because you can get a regular DL in Virginia and drive whatever RV you want... does not make you a good driver. If anything, it makes you more dangerous because you have a false sense of security in your ability because some policy wonk in Virginia decided you don't need extra qualifications to operate such potential large vehicle set up. Overconfidence is a dangerous condition.
But you were just being snarky, right?

Just because you pass a test and pay more for the license does not mean anyone that does not is unqualified. My truck and 5er at 24,170 does not need the "special" license.

Well actually we have a government that keeps its nose out of our buisness. That is one big reason why Va is always in the top 5 best states to do business.

Only 3 problems with VA, it gets cold and snows there, traffic sucks, and taxes are high.

I have remedied my weight issue, just by a Dually. I will be hitting the scale Friday for truck only and the Saturday for truck and loaded 5th.

We get on average less than a foot of snow annually. You can get stuck in a traffic jam on I81 but some counties don’t have a traffic light and taxes on our 25 acre farm and 4 bedroom cape Cod house is $1265 per year.
I think you are talking about eastern and northern Va around DC. I’ve never been down there so I only know what I read.

Yes, worked at the pentagon while in the military. Lived off base in Arlington. Everything about that nearly 3 years sucked. It has only got worse my cousin that still lives there says. He is moving near me along the southern coast of NC. Low taxes and traffic. Once every 3-4 years we get an inch or so and by lunch it is gone. They do get snow inland. I go to Florida for 3 months in the winter. My uncle lived in Arlingto 34 years and the closest he got to D.C. Was Andrews AFB a few times.

I wouldn’t live in Arlington if you gave me the place, it SUCKS. People call from all over the country and sometimes they ask how close to Washington are you. If they are in Wyoming or Alaska I say we are about as far away from Washington as you are. The the places couldn’t be more different.
Something that has suprised me about Wy is I have a friend in Dubois. I ask him how much snow he gets in Dubois and he said they very little. He can normally sweep it off his deck. Snow goes north and south of Dubois. The mountains protect Dubois. They have a webcam on Dubois and sure enough they get very little snow in town.
