I just reveived my 50 amp surge protector. I will feel much better now when i'm plugged into power. Too bad these are not standard equipment.

Just another item the manufactures know we need, but don't provide to save money.

We have one from progressive, works for both 50 and 30 amp. Never plug in without using.

Just too bad MFRs don't offer a Hardwired unit as an option. Those of us who know the value would most likely be willing to pay for the convenience haveing it already installed, rather one of the first mods.

But then we would not be able to post pictures of the trials and tribulations that follow with being a member of the Ozz Mod Montana Owners Club (OMMOC)!! Like others we opted for the self-installed hard-wired version and have never regretted the purchase. And I did post pictures!!

Plus there is a certain satisfaction when you install it yourself and you KNOW it's done right. You don't have to follow up behind a "craftsman" to check his work.

I am pretty sure I was saved at least once by my surge protector. It shut down when running the AC every few seconds. You could watch the voltage fade as the AC powered up until it shut down when the volts reached 93 I think. I have heard that AC gets destroyed at low voltage, so that is good - that is why I bought one in the first place. Cost $500 or so for new AC unit.
By the way, if you have a surge protecter it may not like the power from a generator. I found out the hard way. At least most of the new gennys have a floating ground, so they can be plugged in to your house and not mess up with the neutral/ground thing in your home main box. But that means a surge protector that checks for ground will give an error. I had to ground across the neutral/ground in the genny and then it worked.

Progressive makes one that is designed to be installed in the storage compartment and hardwired. When ours crapped out after 10 months, I sent back to them, and they repaired and reimbursed me for the shipping costs as well. No problem since then, and I see quite a few of them in our travels.

We have the progressive and love it. Ours crapped out after six years, sent it back and they repaired it for free.

Where do you get a good surge protector?
On edit, What do I need and where should I buy it?

I got mine from Dyers RV Parts on line. They had the best price on the 50 amp one I got and shipping was fast. Just shop the net.

You can get direct from Progressive; go to their web site. They have a 50 AMP portable or a hardwire box, both work 30 and 50 AMP. Not sure if your 2001 is 30 or 50 amp, but if you ever upgrade to a newer fifthwheel, most today are 50 AMP, and you would be set. I cant talk to price differences between the manufactorers, but I can say Progressive gets an A+ for reliability and customer support.

There are plug-in versions and hardwired versions. I went with the hardwired Progressive Industries 50 amp Hardwire Surge Protector EMS-HW50C. At the time the best price I could find was from rvupgrades.com Progressive has a really good reputation for customer service. Many have sent them in even if they took a hit and they will fix or replace it even well out of warranty period.

Only problem I have had with Progressive was that the portable unit is water resistant, not water proof, and the circuit board fried when moisture got in; Progressive repaired for free, and in the return box, included a plastic cover for protection. Others either tape the plug, or throw a bucket over the electrical post. Has several safety features to protect the RV, to include automatic shutdown during specific power fluctations.

X2 on Rvupgrades. Cheaper than Tweety's.
