Garmin RV GPS

Has anyone used the Garmin 780 RV GPS?
Google gets you in too much trouble with a 37 foot trailer and a crew cab long bed truck.
Any thoughts?
thank you.

Garmin 660RV

I bought the 660RV a year ago - I think - for $199 or so...I think???
It was much cheaper than the 770RV which I think was $399 at the time.
I bought the 660 because it had built in traffic info received from a local source via FM signals (I think.) The 770 required me to be hooked up to a smartphone to receive traffic and weather. I wanted phone bluetoothed to the truck system - not the Garmin.

The 660 does have low clearance warnings. It warned us to re-route on one of the interstates in Memphis to avaid a low clearance bridge. Last year while I was doing research I believe I read that Garmin does not have ALL the low bridges that exist...maybe the ones on big highways.
I looked at the 780 page on Garmin.com - seems like the 660 has all of that same capabilities but smaller screen.

My new truck has apple carplay and I really like using the google maps app with it set to "satellite" view (not maps view). That gives you a real world pic of parking lots and fast food restaurant before you pull in and can't back out! I will still use the 660RV in addition to the google maps or the Chevy built in nav.

I have the 770 and used it for the first time and if I didn't know the roads, it would've gotten me in some trouble. From low clearances to going on roads that I can't legally go on and can't go on even with my truck. I used Google Maps, and a truckers atlas as well. There's suppose to be an update for the 770 to fix the issue the last update broke that caused it, just haven't updated it yet. I would check, double check and triple check the route it gives you before rolling down the highway and you're on a parkway or a road, you can't be on.

Yeah I was hoping for something better than Google, Google sent me down a road that ended and almost no way to turn around.

I used google maps for the sat. imagery. The Garmin is good, once I got out of New England, it worked pretty good, just double check, triple check your routes. A good 'ole truckers map works best still.

Thanks I'll have to get a set of the trucker's maps.
I know Garmin you can set your route to the computer and it keeps it.
Google will find an faster route and try to update it, even when you tell it no thanks keep the original, it does it anyways.

If you are buying a "trucker atlas"... buy a "Rand McNally" brand and go for the laminated one. It will last you for a long time.

It lists Low bridges and restricted roads, by state and route #,whether state or federal roads, in those states.

Electronic devices are known to have flaws, dont always keep good signal and need updates frequently. Even the "co-pilot" program in my company semi has issues and flaws.

The Google map in "satellite view", is a good resource that I use when going to new customers, to check my route and where their docks, etc are located. I DO NOT use it for travel.

Just purchased LowClearances.com lifetime update. Imported clearances into Google Maps, Google Earth and as soon as I get my updated maps to install into the Chrysler Uconnect (Garmin) I will add them to our TV GPS. I did a quick sanity check on a low clearance overpass I encounted in central Texas on the way from Magnolia Beach and it was there.

Is it possible to have the Uconnect in my truck maps / updated with the lowclearances? is that what you said here? I am looking for a all in one option with my Ram 2500 Nav Maps.

I use RV Trip wizard to plan route then text route to phone with google maps. Work like a charm and costs way less than a Garmin. I have talked to people who have had problem with Garmin sending them on a bad route, low bridge, dead ends, etc.

For almost 9 years of full timing we've used a Rand McNally RV GPS and a truckers atlas and have yet to have any issues.

Have used the Garmin for over six years and 50k miles. Only had it give me a bad route once when it wanted me to turn onto a two lane road that had a RR bridge clearance sign on it of 12' something a couple of miles ahead. Maybe it would have had me turn before this, but I didn't take the chance. Other than that one time, it's been flawless.

I am in the process of purchasing a Garmin RV 770 LMT-S RV GPS. On the Garmin website, the only CON was that it was difficult to set up. Did any of you find it difficult to set up your Garmin 770?

Getting used to the 770 when searching for campgrounds took some time to understand, but love it now. Glad I went with it.

We have been using the Garman Nuvi 465T for many years with not a problem. I think they all do a good job.
