Entry Steps Lock Missing?
Hello,
We just purchased a new 2019 Montana High Country 381th. We had a problem with one of the jacks not working so we took it into a dealer for repair. I wanted to show the person something inside that I had a question about so I opened the door and was about to pull the stairs down and the person asked where the lock was for the steps. I said I knew nothing about a lock for the steps.
I guess my question is there supposed to be some kind of lock that I am missing and if so what does it look like?

I don’t have a lock on our 2020 3812 MS steps either. I think they did away with the lock. Just has a stop on each side that lays against the door frame.

No stair lock on my 2018. I’ve not heard of anyone having their stairs fall on them as they open the door but I have heard of the bolt breaking that the gas strut attaches to as people are raising or lowering the stairs.

I have a 2020 381th and no lock. Just the little brackets that stop steps from going past door frame. Just the door being closed holds them in place

did he saw you what he was talking about?
Since you are/were at the dealer I'd just look at other units.
But, if you are missing something then the dealer needs to make it right.
It is always helpful to know what steps you have too.

Montana’s steps have a piston to assist pulling steps up and down plus holding in the up position. Other RV makes and models have a similar step with a locking mechanism for the up position.

That particular person is not staying up to date regarding product knowledge and updates. He could possibly be the same person who says "sure, you can pull it with a half ton truck".

So what keeps the steps from banging around while traveling? Do they attach to anything? or just "Stand up"?

I have a Montana High Country 375FL (2019 model), and the steps do not have a lock either. I've never had one fall and bop me on the head either.

They just stand up. That was my thought when they asked. But it must be the shock that everyone is talking about.

The shock holds them up when the door opens and the door closes on then when going down the road

I have a 2019 381th with the morryde steps. I relocated the stops farther up so that there is less leverage on the door frame to distort it. It was an easy fix I don't know why they have the stops so low in the first place...

You mentioned "Stops". Are you referring to the twist lock mechanism when they are folded up? That's a great idea! May just save a door frame.

Strut assist for steps

Here’s what they generally look like. This is on etrailer.com, but others have them too. There are certain measurement requirements you’ll need to check into. My RV came with the strut assist but there is probably someone out there who has added it. Hope this helps point you in the right direction.
