400 clams and 2 months Flymutt ???? it lasts you that long?? you must not go to any Casino's like all the other Old Farts
Yep, 400 bucks and a mountainous credit card statement! I read yesterday that we may soon be using our I-phones (Android in my case) to make purchases instead of credit cards...bring it on! BTW, I don't consider myself and old Fart since the report came out stating that the new 30 is 70 (which would make me about 20)

We started full timing in Feb 2010. Put $2,000 in the safe. We use a credit card for ALMOST everything and pay it off at least once a week online. (We get gift cards according to the usage). A couple of times we've replaced some funds in the safe but not much. I think we still have about $1,200 in there. Just in case......

There are 5 pages of replies and I've not read all of them so I may be duplicating someone else's.

We've been on the road for 10 years and, obviously, we need to occasionally replenish our supply of cash. I do not like to pay ATM fees, so we don't do that.

What we do is when we need cash we use the debit card at Walmart or any of several grocery stores. Walmart will let us get $100 cash back for each purchase. Stater Bros and Von's grocery stores limit it to $200 per purchase.

If I need more than that we split our purchases and each go through a separate checkout and each get cash. I've been known to take one thing out of the grocery cart, get cash, take out another, get cash. It's only limited by the daily debit card withdrawal limit set by my bank. When a checkout line is not busy, meaning nobody behind me, I've been known to ask them to check each of two or three items separately so I can get cash back with each purchase.

As for how much to carry, I carry anywhere from $100 to $1000. It's really rare we *have* to use cash but it does happen. I prefer to use a credit card that gives me cash back whenever I can.

I like to start any sojourn with $500 in cash. It doesn't mean I have to spend it all, but that amount will cover just about anything where I couldn't use a credit card.

Visiting multiple ATM's to withdraw small amounts of cash can become costly with ATM fees.

When I was a kid $500 was a big deal. But today, it's like the equivalent of $30, but it's all relevant.

We also have a Wal-Mart Discover Card which allows us up to $100 cash back and also gets us a $.05 per gallon discount for fuel (where available). We seldom carry over $100 to $150 with us. We've done this for over 12 years of full timing without any problems.

We have just two credit cards plus the debit cards. Each quarter the credit cards designate which types of stores they'll give 5% cash back on. Everything else is 1%. At least one quarter per year the 5% is for purchases at filling stations. So we be sure we use the card giving 5%, as appropriate. One of the cards has a $300/yr limit on cash back but the other one either has no limit or we've never hit the limit. We average probably $50 to $60 back per month and have it just applied as a credit to our account. And we have both cards set to automatically draft our checking account in full every month. That way we never pay any interest on the credit cards. When we need cash we just use the debit card as I noted before. Yesterday I bought milk at Von's and got $200 cash back. No ATM fees. We've been doing this for 10 years and it's always worked well. If we're going somewhere where it's a long ways to a store where we could get cash, then I stock up on cash before we head that direction.

Even though we are now full timing, we treat this issue the same as if we were traveling in our car or an extended trip on our Harley. On the road for a month, probably $500 cash, on the road for 3 months, probably %1500 or more. It really varies but the amount never falls below several hundred on hand. Some places just "don't feel right" for using debit or credit cards, you know...out in the middle of nowhere and the clerk has ten piercings and more tattoos than me! Now don't get me wrong, in those cases I don't drag out my money clip with stacks of big bills and pay cash either. Small bills in a small amount in your billfold or money clip and the rest hidden in the crib-on-wheels. I agree with some that there are better deals at times by using cash.

A few years ago we traveled across Canada from Port Huron to Nova Scotia. At that time we used Passport America, which saved us a lot of money over 7 weeks. Nearly all these campgrounds required cash instead of credit card. I prefer to always pay for dining with cash, don't want my credit card leaving my sight, plus sometimes gas is less with cash. Anyway we usually carry around $2000.00 and generally bring some home. Most of the time, when we get home my trip is paid for. I have a special hiding place in the Monty that only the DH and I know, but if traveling with friends we each know about the others in case of accident or emergency. Works well for us.
