You should have a transfer switch that senses shore power and will bypass the inverter while plugged in. Shouldn't hurt anything. Turn it off when storing the trailer.

As Tony said, yes you can leave the inverter on. Actually, the benefit to doing so is that if power goes out, your fridge will run on battery until it is restored, giving you a "battery backup" for the fridge.

I turn my inverter on only if I'm going to use it as in driving. Any time it is on, even on standby, it is using electricity and subjected to wear and tear. When living in the RV if the power goes off, which is highly unlikely where we are, we notice it immediately since the digital clocks all go blank.

Agree with Cat320 post #5. I can hear inverter running so prefer to shut it off when not needed. No reason to have it running just to wear it out sooner.
Yes it would be a backup for power outage in campground but temp hold will in Refrigerator without power for some time. I figure I will return before that would be critical.

Rigs like mine with gas absorption fridge and inverted plugs require the inverter to be left on in order to have 120 volts at those inverted plugs. So if the inverter is off the plugs are dead. As I stated, the inverter has a transfer switch built in that will pass shore power to those plugs when present. However, in order for the inverter transfer switch to work the inverter needs to be on. At least those with Dimensions inverters. I don't know about the Xantrax. The only noise you would hear is the cooling fan which shouldn't activate unless the unit under a load. And as far as wearing it out, in a passive state their shouldn't be any concern.

Our Diminsions inverter is wired up the same in our rig. Unit is in bypass when on shore power, but if left off it will not supply bypassed power to our residential refrigerator

Our Magnum also has to be left on to bypass power to the Fridge, but it is also a 45 amp Charger when not in Inverter mode.
