UPGRADING BRAKES

While attempting to determine the weight rating of the axles under my Monty (the weight label says 5080# per axle), I went to the Dexter Axle website (www.dexteraxle.com). The closest I could find was an axle rated 5200# (CSA Rating). I think that that is the Canadian rating. The same axle (DXQ Electric Brake 6000#) carries a 6000# rating with no disclaimer, so I am assuming that it is a US rating. In addition there is another 6000# rated axle (Electric Brake 6000#). There is another axle (Electric Brake 7000#). The only difference between the two 6000# axles appears to be the brake shoes. The 7000# axle appears to use the same shoes as the Electric Brake 6000# with a different magnet. Otherwise everyting is the same. I will have to pull a wheel to determine what axles were installed, but it appears that the brakes can be upgraded by simply changing the magnets and possibly the brake shoes. Has anyone done this or heard of it being done?

When I had the Mor/Ryde Individual Suspension axles on our Montana, they upgraded them to the 7,000 lb ones. I'm told that the magnets are larger than those on the 6,000 lb axles and that the brake shoes are a little larger. I can't verify that. I'm just trying to recall from memory. That's sometimes hard, after all it was three years ago.

Orv,

Carol's memory has the same problem, but, I thought Al told me that the 7000 pound axle had a thicker wall, that is NOT the right descriptive word, but that the pipe (again, NOT the right word) that made up the axle was actually a bit thicker on the 7000 over the 6000.

(Carol is now gonna put on her flame resistant suit! HA HA HA, just in case I put my foot in my mouth here!)

Orv,

When I looked at the Dexter website it indicated that the 3 axles all use 12 x 2 brakes. I'm sure that they have larger, but I was looking to improve breaking without changing the axles and hubs. Did you have a noticeable improvement in breaking performance after you had the work done (I know the ride had to be much better).
