Another tire-ing question!

Since I have been researching tires to replace my scary Marathons, I have read many threads, and BFG or 614's seem to be the tire of choice. My local dealer gave me another today that I haven't seen mentioned, Maxxis commercial rib 235-85/16. I know they make a great tire in the 15's for TT's, but know nothing of these. Anybody have any experience with 'em?

James,
I replaced the Marathons on our rig with Maxxis M8088 (235/80R-16 (E))about 9 months ago. I have put about 4k on these new tires and so far so good. I always visually check the tires when I stop and place the back of my hand on them to feel the temp. The one thing I immediately noticed about these new tires is they are much cooler to the touch after running them down the road. Here is a link to the website where I bought mine and some others here on the forum too: Gripston. Best price I was able to find anywhere. Others will probably be along to give their opinions. I looked on the Maxxis website and could not find the tire you mention in your post.

r,
Jack

I also couldn't find them on Maxxis' website. I guess another visit to the dealer is in order to get more info.

Send a message via Yahoo to NCFischers
We have the BF Goodrich Commercial TA's and are very satisfied with them.

My dealer put the Maxxis tires on my unit free when I bought it. I had them on my last 5er and they were still good when I traded up with 6000 miles on them. I have about 4000 on these now with no problems. I read a lot of good reviews on RV.net and didn't see any bad reports.

I was pretty sure that I wanted the BFG's, but he said that the Maxxis rib was comparable to the Michelin rib. Could just be sales talk.

I swapped my marathons for BFG's over 12 thousand miles ago and am very pleased with the BFG's!

Lonnie, our Montana tire guru, uses Bridgestone Duravis 500s on his Montana...so that's what I put on mine. If a tire dealer, who can get any tire, uses them I figured they'd be okay, and they are fine.

Lonnie has recommeded the BFG's, Firestone Transforce, Michelein and Bridgestone Duravis 500 and 250HD's. I have the Duravis 500's and now have about 13K miles and the treads are great, PSI remains stable, and a good tire for us. Do your homework and yes the GoodYear G614 is probably the best but others are there too!

Thanks for all of your replys. We just returned from another trip, so far no problems, but will upgrade before any longer trips.

Compare the specifications on the Goodyear G949 or G947 with the other tires suggested here. They're all the same load index (E) pretty well but how many offer steel reinforced sidewalls; rib tread design or commercial wear and tear specs? I researched tires until I was having rubber nighmares and $$$ for $$$, these stood out. Compare at least then make an informed decision.

Just came back from our 4th of July weekend after our maiden voyage with the new BFG T/AS There were no issues and when I checked the torque of the lug nuts it hadnt changed. It made me feel more comfortable not worrying about bombs blowing up.

Thanks for all the good advice.

We have the Michelein Rib, no problems in over 23,000 miles of towing with them.

Last summer we had a major mishap with the China-Bombs that were on our 2007 3500RL. Rear passenger tire tore the rear slide panel fender and double axle fender and the other tire was seperating. Replaced both then. Before leaving last weekend, I had the drivers side checked and they found those two were seperating and hed them replaced. Now we have Maxiss on both sides and the ride is mnuch smoother. When we looked at the tires on pasenger before leaving, we noticed a nut came off one of the spring-schakles and had it replaced because the threads were damaged with it sliding outward. Going over the three passes on the west coast (Calif to Oregon), our mileage was about 10-1/2 per gallon with our 2003 Ford F-350 deisle.
