How to tell if I have Never-Adjust brakes?
Just got our 2011 Mountaineer 4 weeks ago and thought I would check the brake adjustment since Dexter says they should be adjusted after the first 200 miles. After removing the two plugs, can not see or feel the adjusting wheel? Two plugs at the bottom of drum and one I can only see a yellow spring and the other right next to it only a steel rod, no adjusting wheel?

If you can see a yellow spring, then you have the self-adjusting brakes, per the seminar we just had at the Goshen rally.

Curious - If there is no adjusting star wheel, how does one release pressure from shoes on the drum so the drum can be removed?
Also, anyone have a pic of the yellow spring by chance?
Thanks,

There is an adjusting wheel that can be seen through one of the adjusting hole, but you have to really look for it. It does not look like the traditional adjuster. It has many fine teeth on an angle, as I would say, in it that the adjuster lever rachets on to adjust the brakes. That lever can easily be pulled aside to back the shoes off. If you change brake shoes I would advise doing one at a time so you have another one to look at to get the self adjust cable and mechanism back the way it is suppose to be. You can pre adjust the brakes through the backing plate holes alfter putting on new shoes, at least I did. My 2 cents.

The difference you can see right away is the self adjusting brakes have two slots side by side as the non self have only one slot.
This was also discussed at the factory tours.

We were also advised that it was not cost efffective to change just the brakes on the new units but rather the entire assembly. I have a complete set of the new forward self adjusters in my under belly as many of us purchased them at the rally.

How do self adjusters work? do we have to do anything other than drive forward?

According to link above, they work both in reverse and forward to adjust the brakes.

According to the seminar at the rally all you have to do is drive normally, take a look at them once a year.
