Slide problem...

On our Michigan trip a few weeks ago, we broke on one of the front living room slides. This is our 3rd one that broke in 3 years now. Fortunate, I was able to untangle the spaghetti mess and continue with our vacation. I did immediately call our local RV dealership at home and schedule a repair for the slide cable, which was scheduled for about 6 week out from that point.

Meanwhile, we had a couple other minor issues going on so we decided to just let them fix it all while they had it. So, the list grew a bit, but nothing really traumatic. It's just, I'm not in the mood to fix these things myself this time.

Fast forward a bit, and we decided with the problems we had with breaking slide cables, we'd have the repair shop double check and readjust all the slides, just for a safe measure and peace of mind.

The kitchen slide (375FL) in the middle of the trailer, carries the residential refrigerator. For the last several months, the slide has been acting choppy and jerkey, but didn't think too much about it. We asked "them" to take a good look at the kitchen slide and see if they could figure out what was going on with it ... and fix it ... whatever it took.

They fixed the broken cable with no issues at all. But I got a call from them about the main kitchen slide. They said the gear box had a broken gear, thus causing the jerking. Of course, I told them to fix it.

Well, after another 3 weeks, they called back and said everything was fixed. He explained to me when I went to pick it up, that the motor was installed at an angle (from the factory), and the chain was not riding on the gear correctly. It was at an angle, and this is what caused the tooth on the gear to break.

Imagine that Keystone! Such quality assurance again!

He also said that same kitchen slide bottom cable was way too loose was letting the floor angle in a downward slope. He corrected the tension on the bottom cables and got the floor level again in the slide. I had no idea this was a problem.

From the first day of delivery, we noticed the kitchen slide had a slope on the floor and figured it was just the way it was suppose to be. Nope! Thank-you again Keystone for your wonderful quality assurance!

He adjusted the cables, installed a new gear box, and got all the cables tensioned correct. He also said, all the other slides were OK, as they checked all of them.

We also asked him why he thought we broke 3 cables in 3 years, and he said ... "probably just cheap cables from the factory." He said, "ours will last forever."

Anyway, just thought I'd share. Got the camper back, sitting the drive way, and I'm taking the opportunity now to get a few things done to it I've been wanting to do for some time.

One thing I'm doing right now, I have stacks of lumber I carry for leveling, for the jacks and even for leveling the picnic table. I brought it all into my wood shop and decided to repaint it all and make all that lumber look pretty again. And oh, I weight all that lumber, and I was surprised at the total weight ... 106 pounds ... I would have bet a hundred dollars it weighed more than that all together.

I figure, with the camper on concrete blocks right now, I'll repaint the wood, and decided I'm gonna get creative, break out my scroll saw again and create miniature campers I'll attach to the sides of the blocks that go under the jacks. Anyway, it's a nice winter project since we are home right now and not going anywhere.

Meanwhile ... thank-you again Keystone for your attention to Quality Control.
