Traveling with a residential fridge

For those of you that travel with a residential fridge, rather than full or long timing. How do you pack your fridge so that when you get to where your going and open the fridge door everything doesn’t fall out in the floor?

We place these in front of drawers and bins that we added to hold things on the shelves.

We have the MORryde IS so our unit travels fairly smooth, will as best as it can on our wonderful roads. But we to use spring loaded curtain rods just to keep small things from vibrating towards the door. Have put over 50K miles doing it and no issues.

A picture is worth a thousand words: These are the newer style of spring loaded shower curtain rods, purchased from Wall Mart. Twist both ends the opposite direction, expand, then twist back and they tighten down. Works wonderful! I picked white rods to match the inside of the refrigerator. Nothing fall out, tumbles over, or gets dis-arrayed. Keep everything pushed to the back and the bars tight against everything so nothing can fall forward. Place them high enough that nothing will fall over, and low enough that nothing will slip under. Works wonderful!

Various sized plastic containers (available at Lowes) sitting on top of shelf liner. Nothing moves, everything stays put and no adjustable bars to stow or rust.

Same bars/system I use and it works awesome. I also use them in the pantry as a protection so nothing slides backward and breaks the glass in the door.

We have a number of clear plastic trays we place smaller items in if they go on the shelf. Also, we only keep a few can drinks in the fridge at any one time and they are kept in the door. We keep the remaining in the pantry and replace one-for-one as we take them out. Last year we made a 6000 mile trip over 6 weeks and never had anything fall out when we open the fridge up.

We use the old style spring loaded curtain rods ( did not know there is a “new” style available), a couple of plastic containers and we leave the beer in the cardboard containers they came in, 12 packs, and turn them around when we depart and arrive. 12,502 miles this spring/summer and nary a falling item!

I guess when we return from Mexico in the spring I will have to find some of the new style curtain rods. It is unbearable for me to let DutchmenSport have something that we don’t!

We use those bars that go across the fridge, and we drive on paved roads carefully. My wife tells me we have never had anything fall out and our fridge is usually very full at any point in time. Rough roads might cause some problems though.

I've found that when things get shook around it isn't so much from an up and down motion, it is from moving side to side. Slowing down a bit for curvy roads helps but the main reason is due to the steering wheel. That trailer is at the end of a whip. The wrong movement of the truck's front wheels amounts to a lot in the trailer.

We have competition when towing with friends. When we get to camp we check the chains that hang from the ceiling fan. The goal is to not have either chain wrap around a fan blade. The one with the fewest wraps wins. We're getting pretty good at it. This little game goes a long way towards not beating up the trailer and its contents while towing.
