Water tanks and waterline contamination.

I know people get tired of these posts, but last month I took a sample of my RV water for testing. I did it after my regular maintenance schedule. The County lab tech told me several articles he read talk about Legionnaires Disease in RV faucets and waterlines. It more common than you might think. He directed me to this 2013 article. I felt I should share it. While most of us don't drink our tank water, many brush their teeth or breath in spray from water outlets. While it's still rather rare, it's another reason to keep systems sanitized.

Thanks for the article.

As a new RV owner, I am curious how many use their fresh tanks for drinking water or just non-drinking uses.

If folks feel "tired" of reading something like this, they can just skip over it. Others can read it and do whatever they wish. I never use the fresh water tank for anything! I also haven't sanitized it...ever! I do use a combo of filtration on the water hookup and when I use a single filter, it is one that removes most things. I also use bleach into the sediment filter housing to treat all pex lines and water heater to get rid of that tank odor that developes all the time. If I was using the fresh water tank, I would seriously consider a uv inline filter as well. John

A good time to offer a tip: Go to a pool/spa supply store and get some sodium dichlor. It's a powder. Much easier to use than bleach, much less destructive to plastic, much more available chlorine than bleach. Just add the powder to your hose before filling and use just 1 teaspoon per tank to sanitize then flush as usual. Much easier to carry in a small container than bleach.

Mark, that's what I use from the pool supply. Thanks everyone for nice statements, I wish the moderator left it where I posted it. I not sure some member ever look in this area. Thanks again, I just really thought this was important!

Rick I spoke with a chemist who said it is more effective than bleach. He suggested bleach also is harder on components, no proof was provided just his observation. When you read up on subject you find conflict among the experts. I do know that if you fill tanks with treated water, most of the bad bugs are killed. It's when you fill from questionable sources or "hoses that have not been treated" you run a risk of contamination. Read where some people fill tub with water and soak the hose in tub adding cup of bleach. I just run my chlorine through the hose. Oh always use separate hose for Tank Flushing. BTW my buddy in Chico had his Airstream tank come back positive for Legionnaires. It's really a sleeping giant.

Treat your water hose!!!

I will be using sodium dichlor from now on and thanks for the reminder that the hose is part of the system - I have never treated it but will do so prior to next use!

Good information! We try to flush and sanitize our tanks before storing and then again before outings. In the AZ heat, one never knows. Not to mention the wonderful smells one can get from the hot water heater if it isn't properly flushed.....however, while we always flush the hose, have to rethink and treat it as well. Thanks MOC! Can't begin to thank all for what we have learned from this forum.

What size container does this come in? Hope it's less than 50 lb bag!
