In the old days when we had to do some winter living in our 5W, installed a catalytic heater and it sure cut down on the amount of propane we used. Weatherstrip the windows. Put foam insulation sheets on top of the S/Os. We foamed the bottom of our old 5W, but would get some spray foam to seal/fill cracks. Think that bales of hay are more effective than skirting around the bottom of the 5W. We have a curtain rod above the entry door with a shower curtain on it that we use for privacy with the door open. We have a towel ring on the wall where we keep the curtain when not in use. Think that arrangement would help keep drafts from the entry door.

Mobilrvn, did you have problems with mice and other rodents, and insects, liking the hay and then getting into your rig? I thought about using hay but had several people steer me away from that given the vermin problem. Just wondering if they were "just lucky" or what.

We (my brother) had cats which Mo fed, so no mice. Only had mice once and that was in Mexico--we don't speak much Spanish and getting a mouse trap was interesting. Did get rid of the little buggers in about a week (had moved to another location---on the beach which helped).

CRS, main reason we used hay was that my brother had horses and hay was available. Depending what part of the country one is in and all the drought areas, foam sheets probably are less expensive and sure are easier to handle.

Sometimes you'll see people using straw bales (or hay) around their mobile homes for added insulation but I don't think it is a good idea simply for the fire danger. Like having a good supply of tinder around your home.

Especially around your furnace and water heater exhausts. However, straw/hay bales are and excellent insulator. If used with common sense, it could be very cost effective, I would think. How are people putting styrofoam sheets on their slide toppers (and under(?) the slide floors?)??? I have awning covers, but I guess I could slide some underneath them... How are they being attached?

I had someone tell me they go to Harbor Freight and by big sheets of a very heavy plastic. They duct tape the plastic to the bellypan, let it drape down onto the ground, and use wood block, tree limbs, whatever, to hold the plastic down. I think they put the weights on the inside where it's not very visible. I'm going to try this approach this year. Apparently you can get enough of the plastic for around $20, although I've not yet priced it. One thing I like about this approach is we have nowhere to store our skirting while on the road so will just rip it off and put it in the dumpster. Next year we'll buy some more.

For the top of the S/O, we cut the foam about 1/4-1/2" wider than the top and just jammed it in and then duct taped down the ends so the wind couldn't get underneath it.
