RVND 7720 Odometer Feature Problems

Has anyone checked the new odometer feature added with the last software update? I have (2) 7720's sitting here, my original and a new replacement that Rand sent, and neither will match, or come close to matching the TV odometer. Both lose about 3-5 mi. every 20 mi. or so. The trip odometer isn't any better. Tried several times setting the GPS odometer to match the truck before driving, & it just lags behind. Funny that the mile markers click off but the odometer doesn't.

Rand is at a loss as to what is going on; originally thought it was a hardware problem, but now are scratching their heads. Either I have the only 2 bad ones, or they are all bad & no one has reported it. My feeling is that there is a software bug - not surprising since these things run on Windows CE.

All my GPS units advertise they are not 100% accurate. I have a Garmin that points out a position, then it also states that is can be off by 15% to 30%. How does the device know that it's gonna be off by that much? Since not knowing exactly where you are, it seems to reason that it's gonna be hard to know 100% of the time how fast you are going and how far you've gone.

Since GPS technology is not 100% and they admit it, I wouldn't worry about being off by a few miles any more than I think a published map is 100% correct. I used my GPS on a moving Amtrak train once and it was clocked at 92 MPH. While it might not have been 100% accurate it did feel a lot faster than when the SPS said 70 MPH. The numbers are fun to look at. Compared to a couple of decades ago, I like the technology better than not.

One reason for concern is that with the new odometer update, they also included a fuel mileage feature to its fuel logs (same as used on the trucker version). The mileage feature is tied to the odometer feature, obviously, to compute mileage from the last odometer reading to the current one. If the current isn't right, then neither will the fuel mileage calculation. Also, 3-5 mi. per 20 mi. of travel is a bit much to 'not worry about'...

As a former programmer, I didn't release anything until it was thoroughly tested. Obviously, this feature hasn't been fully tested. A small thing to some, but annoying to others.

Jim, I haven't tried it out yet, but I can't believe you would have two units doing the same thing without it being a problem that affects others. I could understand maybe a mile every 100, but 3 to 5 every 20 is screwed up! I'm also guessing it's software related.

I wonder if it has anything to do with that feature you can set if you want to go slower than it usually figures?

Jim I have several Garmin GPS units, I sometimes use both my Nuvi 765 and my Nuvi 1450 as they have different features. The 765 has traffic alert and informs me of traffic problems ahead, this feature of course only works where the information is being transmitted as in larger cities. My 1450 has a speed indicator which I have found to be very accurate, whenever I compare it to my truck odometer it is pretty well bang on, it also has a trip log which shows my distance traveled and time in motion and time stopped. These also are pretty accurate particularly the distance.
It has a fuel calculator but I have never used it as I prefer to calculate that manually and always keep a record on a spreadsheet.

Accuracy of any GPS is dependent on several things but a WAS enabled receiver with a constant view of the sky and no loss of signal should give you the kind of accuracy needed for accurate speed and distance.

While civilian GPS is not 100% accurate, any good unit with a constant signal should give you accuracy to within 10 - 20 ft. Military and Survey equipment will be even more accurate.

I would be suspicious of the software and the manner in which it is calculating, more than the GPS. Does it have CTRL/Alt/Delete....LOL

Art, in the early days when the US military first allowed the use of their satellite gps systems for general use back in 2000 or 2001, civilian accuracy might have been as poor as you indicate, that has not been the case for many years. Time you had a new Garmin.

My Garmin GPSmap 62S handheld uses software to calculate the accuracy at any given time based on how many satellites are being received and at what signal strength, under ideal conditions it indicates accuracy at 2 meters or about 6 ft, however in deep valleys and high tree cover that calculated accuracy may be as high as 50 meters or over 150 ft.

Too bad the software was not open source Jim and you could write your own. Hope they sort out the problems for everyone who owns a Rand.

Dick - I asked RM that & they said no. That feature (ETA adjustment) only works in RV mode anyway.

Like I said, this is more of an annoyance rather than a safety issue. Love everything else (except for all the annoying POI's cluttering the screen when you turn 'em on - RM is working on selective display of POI's)...

The other puzzling thing (again, software) is that the mile markers click off accurately, but the software odometer/trip odometer doesn't. Curious if other 7720 owners have noticed this...

Jim, I ran a test last night on a 12 mile run by my truck odometer and RM was 10.2 miles on the trip odometer.
I notice the Mile Markers and speed changes are very accurate but would guess that is based on a gps to data base list and not a calculation of miles traveled. I agree software glitch.

The sharp curve (left or right) is new to me but I was lazy updating so it may have been around for a while.
Safe travels.

John - I agree; software bug. My mile markers are spot on also, which makes it even more frustrating. Talked to RM yesterday - no solution yet...
