FL to CA - 3 routes, same mileage!!

A little exercise on Streets and Trips...Fl to S. Calif.

Route #1..However you get to I-10, then I-10 all the way into the Riverside.

#2..same to I-10 to Mobile, then US 98 up to I-20 at Jackson, MS. I-20 to I-10 (east of Van Horn, TX) then as same Route #1. Avoids all of I-10 through Katrina-land.

#3. Same as #2, then, at Dallas-Ft. Worth, US 287 up to Amarillo and then I-40 across to Barstow, then down to Riverside on I-15.

Would believe...not more than 20 miles difference between the three routes?? Amazing stuff!!

I don't know if you're looking for shared experiences but we drove the Amarillo router from Albuquerque to Fort Worth area and it's not a bad road. It is amazing that the routes are so close in mileage.

We are heading for San Antonio from Alabama after Christmas and we're going to take I-20 so that we avoid I-10 but I must say, I-20 was bumpy when we just drove on it from Fort Worth. We felt every bump!

PJ, that's what I like to see when planning trips. Whenever possible I like to take a different route each time. Doing so without adding a lot of mileage is a good thing.

Judy, as usual we'll avoid interstates unless weather dictates otherwise. My "most desired" route when we leave here covers about 1900 miles, in which only about 50 of the first 1600 miles will be interstate. The last 300 will be interstate because we'll be time-constrained that particular day. As previously noted in an email, watch for us on that 50 mile or so stretch of I-10.

I know there was no question in this thread, so take the following as comments, not as replies.

We are very familiar with large sections of these routes as Patodonn has listed, so here are a few comments:

US 98 to Hattisburg: very good route except for a few miles in the immediate Mobile area west of the interstates. We still take that route many times, but follow the freeways once we reach them in Mobile (going East, that is) At Hattisburg, of course, we take 49 to Jackson and then pick up I-20 as Pat has said.

I-20 to US 82: We live just 20 miles north of I-20 on US 259. Our recent practice has been to go North to Paris, Texas to pick up US82 West. This route puts us well north of the congestion of the Dallas/Ft. Worth metraplex. We used to take 380 through Greenville, McKinney, Denton to Decatur where we would pick up 287 to Amarillo, but the congestion along that route has become increasingly frustrating, hence our change to US 82.

There are any number of routes from I-20 up to US 82: US 71 from Shreveport to Texarkana; Us 69 from near Tyler to Sherman; or TX 135 to Gladewater, Texas where one joins US 271 North to Paris. There is a very nice RV park near the exit from I-20 to Texas 135 (Shallow Creek Golf and RV Resort).

Of course, these routes are of interest ONLY to those who do NOT wish to visit the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and wish to avoid the traffic there.

These are just some observations to post in your notebook for future use.

Steve, I'm afraid we won't even have a chance of crossing paths on I-10 as our plans have changed a big. The U. of Iowa is now playing in the Alamo bowl on Dec. 30th so we are leaving home the day after Christmas heading for San Antonio. Hope to have a visit with Bob and Myrna on the way. Then we'll head to Fort Worth after the New Year for another good dose of loving on the grandgirls. We should be there when you start heading to the Southeast.

I think we'll probably head west on the interstate after Fort Worth to make sure we make our scheduled visit with the MOC gang at Quartzite. Might even fit in a visit with Charlie and Nila in SE Arizona if we make good time.
