They play that occasionally on Willie’s Roadhouse on Sirius. I know there is a tunnel and a snow slide shed (that looks something like a tunnel) on the east side. Recently tried to find out if there ever was a tunnel on the west (Pagosa Springs) side but could find nothing about one. There is not one now. Did find that 47 semis crashed going down the west side from 2015 to 2019 killing 3 drivers. We passed a truck one year as he was pulling off the highway near the bottom with smoke boiling out of its trailer brakes. There are 2 run away truck ramps going down that west side. And they do get used.

In late July, the meadows are loaded with flowers for a couple weeks.

A look at Black Bear Pass from Telluride (west side). And the welcome Telluride visitors got last year. The sign at the turn to Silverton was more emphatic; threatening jail if non-resident continued.

Some thoughts on enjoying the experience. (We have over 60,000 miles and 7 years of travel with our 3750FL. ) At highway speed, its difficult for the driver to enjoy to scenery. At your length, finding a safe place to pull over to take that perfect picture, is a challenge. As an alternative I would suggest taking the easiest route, set up camp, then explore with your truck alone.
We have used the 330 rule ( 330 miles or 3:30 pm) frequently setting up for 2 or 3 nights. That gives us one afternoon and at least one full day to explore. By following this plan, we take the thornless path and have enjoyed our life wandering America.

Appreciate yours and all replies and are taking your advice. We already had a parameter of 6 hours or 300 miles max and will add the 3:30PM to that list. We are now retired and the main object now is to enjoy and never rush again if possible.

Just a suggestion but I would not pull my 5ver across 550. Stay in Montrose or on the south side north of Durango or in the surrounding area. We dry camped a couple places. These folks that are brave towing 14000 behind a pickup ..well more power to them. We live not to far away up in Wyoming. We have driven it and many other mountain areas without the rig many times and it is gorgeous, in fact it's one of the most amazing scenic drives in the US. It is also going to be white knuckle a good part of the trip. Day trips from Montrose to Oray and Siverton are super fun not towing. The only scarier thing in the US is California 49. Shear drop off for a good bit of the trip.

Take 145 over Lizard Head Pass, then 62 I think it is to Ridgway, and you can pick up 550 from there into Montrose. It’s a beautiful drive, too, and a lot safer.
I agree with Scattershot - Lizard Head Pass is just as beautiful and much safer. We lived for years in Ouray and now live summers in Montrose and winters in Port Aransas, TX. You will be able to get through the tunnel south of Ouray, but I was on the Ouray EMS and Mtn Rescue and have seen too many tragedies to risk that stretch. We always take the western route over Lizard Head with our Montana.

On a side note: Welcome to Montrose! It’s a great town with an excellent Montana dealer.
