I think you have a better chance of finding a hole in the weather going through Susanville. There are a couple RV parks in Susanville you can wait for that hole. The trick is to keep an eye on Fredonyer Mtn. I posted the camera site before. 9:00 a.m. the road will look white with black tracks. By 10:00 slush by 11:30 just wet street. If it's not snowing, Leave Susanville at 11:30 a.m. Watch the East shore for snow on the road. Shouldn't be much because of heavy traffic on the weekends. Pay close attention here. You will turn left off of 147 onto 89. 2 miles down the road you will come to a bridge. There is a pothole in your lane close to the center line. It looks like a puddle but it's a foot deep. Wait for the traffic to clear and straddle the line going under that tunnel. If it's not storming the roads will just be wet and easy driving the rest of the way. Normally if the winds are bad enough they will stop you at the bug station outside of Reno.

General Mileage information:
On US Highway 36 connecting to US 395. Continue Southbound to Reno NV for 85 miles.
Susanville is a small city that has a Wal-Mart (Not Super Center). Largest city to the North is Redding, CA about 2 hours. To the South is Reno, NV about 1 ½ hours. There are 4 burg type towns between Susanville and Reno. Janesville, Milford, Herlong, Doyle. All except Milford have Gas and Diesel. Towing is available in Susanville and Doyle.
