landing gear

Is anyone having trouble with their landing gear on their Montana? With less than 400 miles on our '07 3400 RL, we had to have the roll pin and gears replaced on the left landing gear. Since then, we have had to replace several fuses as the motor is blowing them when we raise the camper to put it on or off the pickup. We were told by an RV dealer to grease the drive gears at the top of the landing gears, and we did that, but we are still blowing fuses. We're heading straight for a dealer to have it inspected as soon as we get home. Comments from other owners who may have experienced the same problem would be appreciated.

We used to have a similar problem and found that we didn't blow fuses if we only ran the motor for short bursts and then stopped for a few seconds, then run it again. Continuing like this, we were always able to run the legs up and down without incident.

We've had good success with ours no problems so far and a lot of hooking and unhooking over the summer. We did mark the maximum extended length and minumum retracted positions to ensure we did not jam the gears at the end. We also installed a 40 amp circuit breaker. We try to make sure the legs lift equally and straight so that one leg does not take all the load, and do not try and lift the TV too much. Good to carry parts like fuses and pins for drive shaft from one leg to the other. Hope they find you problem and fix it. Ellis

Gang,
First day we owned our monty, we blew the fuse due to raising the landing gear past the mark on the main landing gear post. After finding the fuse (it was hiding from view and inline) and replacing it, we have ensured that we don't raise the landing gear past that mark. Works fine since, and have had the rig (09 3605) purchased 5-08.
Best regards

We picked up our 3400rl 2010 in June of this year and last week blew the left landing gear. Replaced under warranty. The dealer felt that the gear on the larger Montana's were too light for the load especially considering the larger basement. He wanted to put on the gear used on the toy haulers, but since it was a warranty issue I passed on his recommendation.

I have follwed the advice from others on this forum and marked the legs to avoid extending/retracting too far. I use 4x8's under the legs to avoid extending too far.

With our first Montana on one of our early trips I noticed that it didn’t respond when I tried to raise or lower the landing gear. I was somewhat panicky since it was so new to us. What I discovered which I believe was partially to blame was how I parked. I had the legs in somewhat of a bind. After that and getting more experience with the fifth wheel I have never had any problems with the front landing gear legs. There may be other reasons for problems to exist but the way we set up and keeping the legs even (level) from side to side and free from being in any kind of a bind; seems to work for us.

You should post this as a new thread instead of resurrecting one that's 4 years old!

James ... 920-00 for the drive pin on the horizontal bevel gear atop the jack screw / 1020-08 for the spiral pin on the vertical bevel gear on the drive shaft. Venture Manufacturing is the company name on the drawing I looked at. If you had the pins in hand, I'd imagine ACE Hardware carries both. A spiral pin is just a fancy roll pin. The drive pin is just a solid steel pin.

For the new folks reading this, one thing that helps is taking a magic marker and marking the legs in the up position and then in the maximum safe down position. That will keep you from retracting or extending them too far and grinding the gears.
