TST Tire pressure sensor

The batteries are dying in a couple of my sensors. These are the early ones that are not 'user' replaceable. While I don't begrudge someone making a living, charging me $25 to replace a $3 (that's per sensor!) makes me cringe. Has anyone tried doing this themselves? How did you get the case apart, and what did you use to reseal it?

Thanks!

Hope you get an answer. There's a lot of us who would be interested.

I believe they are sealed with sound (ultrasonic). I'm thinking about cutting it open with an exacto type knife and using silicone to seal it back up since I'm fresh out of sonic sealers. I also considered putting the two halves back together and putting a bead of epoxy like JB weld around it.

I tried this earlier this year and it didn't go well. I had an old sensor and cut it open with a Dremel tool. The battery was incorporated in such a was that it was almost impossible to replace. I ended up upgraded my system to one with removable batteries.

This doesn't answer your question, but a couple of ours started to stop transmitting after about five years of use so I sent all eight of them to TST to have the batteries replaced. What I received back may be re-used internals but the external case and threaded female was new. They did offer a discount if I wanted to change to the model with the replaceable battery.

Sounds like they cut the case off, change the battery and replace the case with a new one. In that case (no pun intended), I can see some of the extra cost. Plus I notice they dropped the charge from $25 down to $20, which is more reasonable. I'd actually like to have the new pass-through, but the aren't compatible with our older system.

Tom they will last much longer if you remove them when not in use. With no air pressure to them they do not transmit.

I know - and do that. Still they only lasted 4 years.

More than the case was replaced. The screw on end that mates with the valve stem was new. That was appreciated. Mine were quite gungie from road gunk and worn from installing and removing.

I was able to get one apart very ez. the cover was cracked and it came right off. As for I internal parts, I found no way to get it apart to get at the battery. The sensor was still working so I didn't want to force anything and break it.

If sensor was cracked, you could have sent it in for replacement

They have a special on right now with a trade-in of your old unit. The flow through sensor, ease of assigning valve to tire and user replaceable batteries are worth trading "for me". Everyone else has a different situation. My batteries are also dying and I can't predict when that will happen after replacing the sensors.

The 510 system was not made to have the batteries replaced by the user which I'm sure you know. If you were to purchase a new sensor it would be $50.00 so if you look at it that way getting a new sensor for $20.00 seems quite reasonable. It did last 4 years and if you had the 507 system with user replaceable batteries that you change yearly they aren't cheap. Unless you got a great price on the batteries they would be a minimum of $3.00 each x's 4 years would be $12.00. That would make for an $8.00 difference. Just my thoughts. Hugs, Di

I took the offered deal on 507 replacement system. What sold me was the pass through sensors. Adding air with the 510 sensors was a real pita.

For that replacement price plus what you paid for them originally, they probably do nothing and just send you new ones! After all, you are paying again for the replacements and there's probably enough markup on them to cover their costs.
