Noisy hot water heater

I've been camped here in Florida for the last three months. Gosh I'm lucky. Anyway, all of a sudden when I use the hot water I get a funny noise, like a low squeal, coming from the water heater. I suspect it's a valve. Anybody have this problem? I haven't noticed a change in the volume or temperature of the water. Got any ideas? Thanks

Am pretty sure Ozz has a fix for this with pics. He'll be along soon.

You probably just have scale build up. It's a frequent issue, even for S&B's, but in your stick home the water heater is usually somewhere where you can't hear it making the funny noises. Flush your water heater and see if it doesn't go away. That's one of the reasons many of us have water softeners on our water line.

it is probably just a coating on the element if you are using electric. When you have a chance, empty tank and give it a good flush to get any junk off the bottom also. all the elements start to make noise as they build up a coating from the hard water

We're also down in florida and the lime is terrible. We are having the same pops and squeals. I'll pull the element when we get home and flush and inspect the element.

Another cause could be the check valve on the hit water outlet side. A piece of scaling is probably stuck in the valve.

When ours started acting up, I replaced with a better one. It is the brass threads you see in the picture.

Since it was stated "when I use the hot water"
it does sound like the check valve. If it was noisy after
using hot water and anytime the water heater is heating
it would be the heating element.

I had the same 'sound' in our Montana this past summer. I replaced the check valve on the output and all quiet again.

Whew! I have been trying to access my Photobucket account: New dreaded Win 8, all my passwords are so convoluted I don't even know what they are...

But, I found the link to the Check valve change, here it is if you need it, but it can be the element with a coating of scale.
If you don't get hot water at the kitchen sink: Check valve.
Here is the link:
