Any campgrounds near Canyon de Chelly in Arizona that are recommended by MOCers??

Tim,

That is country that does not have much near by. There is a campground in Chinle next to the area. This has only a dump station. Have heard very mixed reviews regarding this campground. When we visited the Canyon we stayed at the place below and made the drive.

About the closest place with a nice campground that I know of is in Bluff, UT. The Cadillac Ranch Campground. This is nearly 100 miles away. If you have a few days there are many places to drive to from Bluff. We spend time each year in Bluff and after about 5 years still find areas to visit that we have not been to before.

Hopefully some others have been in that area and are aware of other places.

Dean

Tim & Susan,
We stayed last year at Cottonwood campground it is about 1/2 mile past the visitors center near thunderbird lodge. there are an ample number of sites big enough, but it is dry camping. They have rstrooms and there are water spigots throughout the campground. The best part is it's FREE. We took a guided tour up the canyon with Adam Teller of Antelope tours.

It was well worth the money.

Are you going on to Monument Valley? You're almost there. We dry camped in Monument Valley near the visitor center for $10/night had a great view of the valley at sunset and sunrise right out of our back window

Monument Valley is a worthy trip. Should you not want to dry camp, there is an r v park just past the lodge. Large enough sites to get in.

Thanks for the info. Charlie and Nila--great hearing from you again after we met at the MOC Rally in Tucson in 2008. We have been to Monument Valley but I would return so working it will be into the planning.

Tim and Susan,

We stayed in that free campground there in Chinle called Cottonwood Campground. This campground in our opinion is nothing to write home about, but it was very convenient for the 3 days we stayed there. This is a poor indian community, so be prepared to share the state park bathroom and the water spigots in the campground. We felt safe there, though.

Spider rock campground is also listed, but it is up a muddy road, and not someplace I would care to stay. Make sure you take the short hike up to Spider Rock!!!

Monument Valley is nice, but we think Valley of the Gods k(near Mexican Hat) is more spectacular, and there is no entrance fee. You can stay at the Goosenecks SP for free too...boondocking. There is also a RV Park in Mexican Hat...real primitive, but doable.

From Goosenecks SP, you want to see Moki Dugway and Moki Point, Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, and Natural Bridges National Park. You could also stay in Blanding,.....we used that place to clean out our tanks.

If you need more information for that area, give me a call, would be happy to help....can even send you coordinates!
