Allison 6 Speed Conversion

Has anyone upgraded their 5 speed allison to a 6 speed? I know it is just a software change, but don't know if anyone is doing it retro. Would appreciate any feedback. Also, if you did, was there a change in fuel economy?

I called GM about doing this same thing, they claim it is more than just a computer update and it cannot be done on the 5 speed.

rames14,

I had done the same thing. I contacted my dealer and was told exactly the same as what Montana Sky said.

There has been a MASSIVE discusion about this subject ove at diesel place .com. Hop over and just do a search. Should be easy to fine. Good info there on all sorts of Chev/GMC trucks.

But in a nut shell, as others have said, ain't gonna happen. Wish it would too.

As was said, the allison tranny is highly modified for 2006.
* A new ratio was added to get the sixth speed. (that means mechanical changes as well as software)
* It is beefier for increased torque rating of the new Duramax LBZ engine
* All new transmission control module
* New wire harness Connector
* New internal mode switch
* Revised Torque Converter solenoid
* New fluid pump design.

As BillE said, go to dieselplace.com. Also follow references from there to GM news releases for vast descriptions of what is changed.
