Congrats on your new truck! There was some discussion about installing an EGT(pyrometer) and turbo boost guage. If you do a search on these two topics I think you will find a great deal of information. Although I have the Duramax, I had both the pyrometer and turbo boost guage installed due to the general concensus of the MOC was if you own a diesel and tow heavy trailers these two guages provide vital info about Exhause Gas Temps and boost pressure. Again, Congrats on your new truck...

Good luck with your 06 F350. I've been very happy with mine The EGT(pyrometer)gauge is one of the best best tools you can add to your truck as it gives you almost instantaneous exhaust temperature readings and allows you to back off the fuel or shift to a lower gear to maintain the temperature in the normal operating range.

Gary-
Look at this website. I opted for the LED digital gauges.

Charlie, Those look real good but I have a question,,,and don't shoot me. This will be my first diesel and I was just wondering,,if the egt and boost are so critical why doesn't Ford supply guages as standard equipment

Your question is a good one and I can't give you a good answer, but you can't know what is going on with the engine unless you have some way to monitor it.

My opinion for the lack of gauges from the factory is:
#1.... increased production costs
#2.... factory philosophy is the design of the engine and components do not require additional visual monitoring.

In my case, if you look at my signature, you see that I installed an after market computer chip that increased engine HP by 80 and extra 150 ft. lbs of torque. Because I opted for this I am outside factory specs on the engine and I felt like I needed additional gauges to understand engine performance. There have only been a few times that I have approached limits, but was glad to have the gauges to know where I was. I know several that installed the chips on their 7.3's but did not install gauges, ignorance is bliss.

Garin1, your truck already has a good boost gauge right on the dash. You don't need to add that.

I would recommend, however, you add the EGT gauge. I have yet to see one standard or optional from the factory on any brand. Yet I think they're crucial when towing heavy weights. Most people don't tow heavy weights, thus don't need the EGT. I had three gauges added on a pillar pod painted to match the interior color. Besides EGT I added water temp and trans temp even though those gauges are also on the dash. The dash temp gauges won't climb until the temp reaches a certain temperature. Then they'll go quite a ways up the scale really quick. I prefer to see if they start to climb even a little. Your boost gauge responds immediately so no need to add one of those.

Some folks don't get the EGT gauge. If you do no climbing of mountains or long steep hills then you can probably get by without it in my opinion.

The Cummins will defuel the engine if the exhaust temps get to high. I'm afraid I wouldn't like what I see if I had an EGT gauge.

Garin1 - Congrads on the new truck. If you want gages go to www.dieselmanor.com they sell the complete kit for all big three TV's. The kits are complete so you don't have to piece the thing togeather prior to mounting everything. The Man I talked to was David Murphy. Very helpful, and a new addition to their gauge set's is an inline transmission temp guage. If you have an automatic. You don't have to drill into your transmission, the temp guage is in a line that take's the trans fluid from the trans (where its the hottest) going to the cooler. LOOK THESE GUYS UP... The whole kit's are very reasonable priced and you get everything you need.
Hope this helps. Later John H (aka Hemlockusa)

If you get the tow package it will have the round plug and the rectangular plug. As for gauges, EGT is the only one not already on the dash that I'd recommend. The dash will have boost, trans temp, coolant temp, oil pressure.

As for drilling the transmission, no need to do that. There is a plug on the Ford TorqShift you remove and replace with the temp probe for the transmission. I wanted a trans temp gauge reading the fluid as it exits the transmission for the cooler, as Hemlockusa recommended, not one that measures temperature in the pan, so had one installed at that location.
