Dave,
Double check the specs on that truck. I am wondering what is the max trailer weight, along with capacity for the kingpin. If those check out and the truck is in good shape, might be worth looking into. Of course offer them $15k and see what they say. =)

The pin weight would likely be the limiting factor here. I think the price may be slightly high too. I'd check that the truck has heavy duty suspension. Faced with the same problem a few years ago, I went with the one ton option with DRW and 4.10 differential for my 3670RL. The truck was only two model years old then and had 42K on it. I paid $28K for it. Personally, if I was going to look for a new TV today, I'd still go with the one ton diesel, but I wouldn't pay extra for the 4x4 option. DRW vs SRW is a tossup- In real heavy wind, the duals give an extra measure of stability, but then we probably shouldn't be driving in those conditions anyway. I'd get a long bed too if at all possible. Just my personal preferences. Happy camping! Don

Give me more information and I can get a quote from my friend the used car lot owner up the street. Options, etc.

Dave-
Looking at the spec sheet on the 2006 3400RL the dry hitch weight is 2165# in the sales book that you pick up at a dealer with 11700# gross dry weight. Keystone's website show the same trailer with different weights of 1975# hitch and 11650# gross.

My 2005 3295RK is listed at 2300# dry hitch weight, gross dry weight of 10300# and I am pulling it with a 2001 F-250 7.3 PSD Super Cab Long Bed 4x2 with a 3.73 rear gear ratio that currently has 86000 miles on it. I did have to add air bags as there was more squat when hooked up than I wanted. The spec sheet on my truck lists carrying capacity as 3575#. This website shows 5th wheel towing for my truck is 14000#. It also lists capacities for a 2000 F-250.

http://www.trailerlife.com/output.cfm?id=42175

As you can see in my signature that I added some after market equipment that allows me to monitor the computer upgrade. Milage with the Montana attached runs anywhere from 10-12MPG depending on terrain and wind direction usually driving 60-65MPH.

I am not endorsing the TV that you are looking at, just giving you data that might help you make a decision.

On the web site you posted, is the towing weight the same on the 3/4 and the one ton Ford and Chev.? I had to say Ford first so you might reply knowing you pull with a Ford. Larry & LaVonne

The 7.3 is a great towing engine with reliability. The 3400 pinweight is one of the lightest of Montanas. Many people here carry more weight and more pinweight with a similar F250. If the truck has the option for a slidein camper then it has heavier springs and a sway bar which adds to the carrying capacity of the truck. Something to check on. I do not know about the price. Check NADA online for a price range.

Larry-
Looking at the site, yes, it appears both trucks in the 3/4 and 1 ton SRW have the same GCWR in the 2005 models. DRW's have a higher GCWR. Towing capacities are different for different body styles and truck configurations.

Dave I tow with a similar vehicle and it does fine. Mine actually had 116,000 miles when I bought it but I knew the former owner and know that it was maintained properly. Our rig has a little more pin weight than the 3400rl too.

It may be a little high but if it is in nice shape it's probably worth it.

I call my 2002 F250 Crewcab SRW 7.3 L diesel "stealth one ton". That is because it has the same engine, transmission/drive train, wheel size, brake package, and the suspension has been upgraded with an extra leaf. Like others, I have added Hypertech Programer III to increase HP and torque.

Will add an exhaust brake when I return. I get very little "squat" when the Monty is attached and there is no problem with steering. You might think about negotiating the price downward if possible. While I think there is plenty of life in the truck, it is now six years old.

When the newer trucks came out, they have quietened the engines to the delight of some. However, I like the throaty sound of the 7.3L engine. It is a guy truck.

Drive around any campground or any major highway on a busy summer day and you'll find an awful lot of 7.3's towing big rigs. It's an excellent tow engine and seems to last a very long time, from what I see and hear.

The 3400 has a relatively light pinweight so I'd be surprised if you need airbags although that remains a possibility with any 3/4 ton truck.

I have no idea if the price is reasonable but agree with those who say if it has had good care it's probably a good truck. Maybe you can get a phone number to call the previous owner, preferably without the dealer talking to him first. I had a dealer call the guy once, then hand me the phone. I asked the guy point blank for his phone number so I could call him back when not in the dealership. The subsequent call disclosed some things he was not going to tell me on that first call.
