Tnat looks like it really hurts. I am surprised the dog stayed around the porcupine long enough to get that many quills stuck in him/her.

Serves it right, and the owner that let it happen needs a chunk out of his wallet to remind him to leash his dog properly from now on. It could have been your dog attact by this out of control dog insted of a pin cousion.

Poor guy, I hope his eyes are OK. I don't know what it is about some dogs and porcupines. I use to do quite alot of duck and upland bird hunting. I had this male Lab that could not leave them alone. I don't know if it was scent or ego or whatever...but he would keep up the attack, getting more and more quills till I could get to him and pull him off. This happened more than once. This was from a 86 pound dog that in 10 years never growled or bit a single person and the small grandkids would sometimes play tug of war with his ears. I sure do miss him and the three other Labs I've shared space with.

Luckily, porcupines aren't too common around here. And, I'd think most dogs are smart enough to turn tail when hit with just 2 or 3 quills, but you always get the thickheaded ones. Then there's my godmother's daschound...he scuffles with porcupines a couple times a year, gets a few quills in the nose every few months. Definitely not too bright.

We have a couple of acres and limit their range to just under 1 acre with the invisible fence. Even with that, our dogs still get into scuffles with woodchucks. You'd think the woodchucks would learn to avoid the dog's territory.

From personal experience, if your pet does get into one remember this, the quills are hollow. If you try to grip them with pliers the squeezing action makes the quill expand in the wound and makes it harder to extract. If you snip the expossed end of the quill (leaving enough to get a grip on it) the air will escape when you squeeze and the quill will not expand.

My great fear as long as we have been camping is that our Daisy would get skunked but that may be changed to this. It is painful just to look at.

Our Pit "Lexus" has a thing for Turtles. One latched on to her cheek once, "once". Now she has figured out how to turn them over and stay away from the front and rips them apart. No I do not just let her do this. I find the remnants when I get home from work. We too have the invisable fence to keep reasonable control of our dogs but that does not keep turtles, skunks, racoons, possums, the neighbors cats and so on and so on from coming in. One thing I can say from experiance about Pit Bulls is that if something really "T's" them off is going to pay for it. On the other hand I have had 2 now and both of them love children, DO not hurt a child around my dog. And when we camp she thinks she is the official greeter of all that come to visit.
