Tow Vehicle Prices!

I've been looking for a new to me Ford f350 truck, around 2017 to 2019 but used prices have soared almost to what they sold for new. I guess I'll keep my 2011 a while longer. What's driving this trend?

Simicondutors shortages are the driving issues with the ability to complete the manufacturing of vehicles. GM is shutting down 4 plants for two weeks because of this. All the auto manufacturers are having issues.

A friend is the general sales manager at our Ford dealer. They sold a new 2020 for more than the sticker price, sticker shock.
He said I could have any new Ford truck as long as it was the green one because it was the only one he had.

I was just offered almost $30K for my 11 year old sig truck by my selling dealer - just under. 135,000 miles but looks like new. Of course he didn't have a replacement that could haul any 5er. Not the brightest way to do business since most pick up owners use treirs

KBB value on my 2012 F350 King Ranch FX4 6.7 loaded is over $41,000. I only paid $48,000 new.

Dealer has a 2021 F150 King Ranch FX4 loaded with sticker of about $73,500. I asked how much he would come off that. He said there is currently a $10,000 premium on high end models making his price $83,500! I said no thanks. Next day he dropped it to $5,000. No thanks. Next day offered sticker if I financed the full price with them. No thanks. Got text today wanting to discus possible offer to go under sticker. Curious to see how low he will go.

In October I will have a 2016 Ram MEGA Cab Limited 3500 6.7 Dually with less than 80K miles - bought used the end of May. Tows the 2020 373RD well thru the Rockies. New 2022 due in.

Last week I took my truck in to my local Chevy dealer for an oil change at their Express Lube facility. Its a big/nice dealership I built back in 2000. Their service bays and service lots were packed and busy. As I walked around the lot I was shocked at the lack of inventory. Both areas where they used to display and store trucks are empty and chained off. They had 10 used half-ton trucks, several with 100k plus miles on them. They had 6 or 7 new white 1 ton work trucks with flatbeds. They had 4 or 5 electric vehicle matchbox toys (can’t remember the model name). The had maybe 30 other cars - a mix of used and new unpopular sedans and SUVs spread out in one of the lots that fronts the interstate. This dealership would normally have 1000 units on the lot and another 500 stored in pastures nearby. It was 8:15 am and I thought I would walk thru the showroom - but it was locked up and dark, does not open until 9:00. Well, I guess so! There is nothing for the salesmen to sell. I assume they have already laid off most salesmen, but I am not sure. It’s a sad/bad situation that I hope gets rectified soon.

The truck I bought used for 41k 3 years ago is selling for 55k as I see them on car gurus. Next year I fully expect my truck to sell for half this price.

I'd tend to agree, not 100% sure on the timing, but it's coming.

This year I dumped 6 vehicles and bought wife a new denali. The denali cost me an extra 12% but the ones I sold were at crazy numbers, I'm crazy happy with the outcome right now.

I should sell my 08 F250 and wait a year or so and buy a new one. I could get a great price on my truck and a new one. I would like a new truck but I’m looking at close to 80 grand and I like the 08. It’s not as quiet as a new one and isn’t as nice but it puts just as good or better.

if you can hold out and swing it later, the new ones with the 10 speed, like the GM/Chevys is awesome. My buddy just picked up a new F-250 and loves it.

The MSRP price on the new ones hasn't moved anymore then normal, but the discounts off of new are significantly different.

Some examples
- Ram was running 20-25% off MSRP, now seeing ~12%
- GMC was running 18-22% off MSRP, now seeing ~10%

Basically, supply issues while demand stays steady have removed many of the new discounts which has super heated the used market. But... the spread between used and new has remained constant (which makes total sense as in a free market that is how is it supposed to work).

If you have a used vehicle, getting into a new vehicle isn't a winning or losing scenario as the trade cost has stayed constant. The only way to get ahead is to sell a used vehicle and hold the cash until the market resets (if it does). The way to lose is to get into the vehicle market for the first time (nothing to sell/trade).

I have looked for new and used (year or two old) replacement for my 2006 Silverado 3500 LT dwl 4x4 lbz duramax and was totally shocked to see what the pricing has jumped to. With 160k miles I will keep driving my truck, as it is finally broke in and runs like new, plus I do not have to buy the dpf fluid.

Should have kept my 04 & tried to sell it this year. Saw some 19 GM 3500 duramax's for about 70 K. Lucked out & got one last fall, not exactly what I wanted but it'll work.

I will be at the rally in Sept. I ordered a 2022 F 350 king ranch dually diesel, due in in Sept. After rally. Have a 2016 F 350 dualy diesel 71,000 miles to trade in. No price until on trade until 2 weeks before trade. If you are at the rally, you can look at my 2016 to see if you are interested. New York plate SCHUYLER on truck.

Don’t know how it is in NY. In Texas we have a 6.25% sales tax on new vehicles. But that is calculated on the after trade-in price. So if the dealer offered say $40,000 trade-in, that reduces the amount of sales tax by $2,500. Or essentially meaning you get $42,500 credit for your $40,000 trade-in. Can make a difference on deciding whether to try to sell it yourself or trade it in.

As a side note, when I bought my 2012 F350 new the dealer had a link on his web site “Value your trade”. Clicked it and filled in the details, and it said my 2007 F350 had a trade in value of $21,000. But in initial sales negotiations dealer offered $15,000. I showed him a printout of his link and asked him to explain the difference. He offered $17,000. I started toward the door. He offered $19,000. I continued toward the door. He offered $20,500. I thought about going on out but decided to let him have his “little victory”.

I will keep driving my 2007 LBZ clubcab Duramax... The new Allison 10 speed is no where near the transmission the 6 speed is.. And the only emission item I have is the EGR..

Also the new 10 speed Allision has NO external filter on it, only internal... And to service the transmission is a pain..

And imagine what the registration fee would be for a 100K pickup truck in some states...

They are nice with all the gadgets but I'll keep what I have...
