Replacement of broken slide arm

A while back, we discovered that there were a number of broken teeth on the forward slide arm on the large curb side slide. This is the slide arm that is adjacent to the hydraulic ram, and when extending or retracting, the rear end of the slide would be out of sync with the front. This required me to push or pull the back end of the slide as it was operated and the broken teeth were close to the gear pack when extended. I ordered a new slide arm, this one with the teeth for the 15 tooth gear pack gear, instead of the one for the older 18 tooth gear, which was installed up to the 2013 models, which are on our rig. The number of teeth, different on the front from what is at the back end, makes no difference because the gears are the same diameter and turn at the same speed.

The first two photos show the broken slide arm teeth. I had removed to old arm before I remembered to take photos, so that is why they don't exist. I was fortunate it was the front arm instead of the back one, as I only had to remove the plastic fender and was able to flex the skirt metal to slide the arm out and to slide the new one in, instead of have to completely remove the entire skirt metal. The following photos are pretty obvious in the sequence of the install. I purchased the new arm from https://rvupgradestore.com , but the new part was drop shipped directly from Lippert. Also notice the roller on the inner end of the arm which looks to aid in handling the load of the slide. In order to get the arm out and new one in, I had to jack the slide way up, which didn't hurt anything, but the last photos show the way I jacked up the slide and how far it tilted in from the inside view. The whole project only took a couple hours, so really wasn't too difficult. It did help, already having replaced several gear packs in the past, and things went pretty much as I had planned. The new arm was $156.95 plus tax, shipping was free and the arm came in a heavy large cardboard tube. I already had a new 15 tooth gear, as all these gear packs come with the 15 tooth gear and if you have the older arms that need an 18 tooth gear, that has to be ordered separately from Lippert.

Excellent write up and pics! Thanks for the blow by blow description.
I have a couple of questions…
In pic #6 - is that a jack extension? I have never seen anything like that.
Also in pic #6, on the ground left of the pile of bolts - what is the drink of choice for a slide out mechanic?

The jack extension is a kit from Safejack. It is an excellent accessory, especially when working on these rigs. https://safejacks.com/
The cup was just trash that was under the rig.

Nice repair work with great pics and info.. any adjustment required after installing new arm and gear pack or did you just make marks on vertical plate arm and go from there and test slide to see if opened and sealed and closed and sealed ok?

I just scribed marks so it’s aligned where it started at, so it should be good to go. I will test it in a couple days but pretty sure it will work fine.

Not really much to maintain. Lippert says to not apply any lube to the gear or the rack on the tube. I’ve read that you can apply a few drops of oil to the shaft of the gear packs on either side where it goes through the bronze bushings, but doubt that will make much difference. Treat the slide seals and replace them when they finally rot.

Gear rack replacement

Excellent pictures and description. Enjoyed seeing safejack extensions. Just used my set to lift trailer to replace lre rubber spring. Makes it a lot safer to reach bottom of frame.
