Black water tank

Man this forum is great, tons of useful information and helpful people, so Thank You in advance.

I have a 2021 3120rl and I notice when dumping the black water tank it just sort of I wouldn't say trickles but flows out real slow in comparison to the Grey water tanks.. I still have warranty and the dealership looked it over and says the valves are opening all the way and it's venting properly, they tell me the next step would be to have it scoped to see if there is something in there, but that wouldn't be covered under warranty if it comes back as fine....

So in my round about way, have any of you noticed the black water tank draining slowly?

Jer

Mine is much older. But the contents of the black tank has always come rushing out when the valve is first opened. Yours doesn’t sound normal unless you are emptying before it gets much water in it. And speaking of water, you should use a lot of water to make sure it does flush everything out well.

For the 3120 (and similar configured models) it helps if the front is elevated to drain the black and grey tank 1. I only do that when winterizing to get a good thorough flush.
This is mentioned in the factory tour video.

Jer,

Sounds like you may not be using enough water. Try filling your tank with 20-25 gallons of water and see how quick it drains as a test.

I put a lot of water in the tank.... I'll even let the black water flush run for several minutes... I'll just have them send the camera in there and see what the issue is... I'll report back after I've had this done.

I forgot to mention it's up at the dealership right now for warranty repair. I told them of this problem and they let me know that they filled it full of water to check it out and it was draining slowly for them as well. When I talked to them today I suggested can you just take one of the similar models off their lot and fill it full of water and then drain it to see if it drains quicker than mine. He just said that wouldn't accomplish anything because even though they are the same model everything could be different. This makes no sense to me. So I'll just have it scoped

Plumbing routing depends upon who is working at the factory and what mood he/she is in that day. There are no schematics to follow. I would make sure your vent isn't clogged. You can take a hose up on the roof and run it down the vent to see if it runs into the tank. Or you could put plenty of water in the tank, then start draining and open the toilet flush valve with your foot. If the draining speeds up, it's definitely the vent.

You may have blockage from waste inside the tank that has hardened and blocking flow. Two options to think about. Get an external backflush (Valterra Flush King is a good one) and between that and a hose through the toilet, flush repeatedly to break up blockage.

I have read reports similar to yours, and the folks found the round cutout where the input pipe connects dropped into the tank and the installer was too lazy to remove it and it's worked its' way to the discharge block most of it.

We had a 2020 3120 for 5 days which was replaced with a 2021 model and they are both slow like yours. I have not gone so far as to get it scoped but that would be the only way to know for sure. Both were slow from brand new so maybe there is something from the factory. How odd that could happen with all the Keystone QC....

If you do have it scoped and nothing is found, have them also make sure the vent is clear from roof to the tank. Water can’t flow out without a source of air to replace it. That means the vent, or air bubbling back up the discharge pipe.

Thanks for all the replies... According to the dealership the vent is good, so next step is just to have it scoped

You can buy a 15 foot lighted scope that plugs into a phone or laptop. I think I paid around $20 on Amazon. You can record video and capture still images. They come in super flexible and a more rigid variety. The more rigid one will fish into tight places better.

I 've used it to check out the AC vents (collapsed and not sealed), see if a water leak in the nose had dried out, find dropped tools, search for a mouse at the neighbors rig, etc. It's a great investment

Pay for the scope. Reason is it has been reported before that when they cut openings sometimes a piece of wood drops into the tank. Eventually that wood blocks the outflow a little but eventually it could be 100% blocked. Watch them do it, they will not want to do it or fix it because it's a nasty job. Good luck!

Absolutely! I had mine in 3x for them to say nothing wrong. I should hold releases in longer since they are cable driven and take some time to shut.
My issue is I'm very good at dumping and connecting black flush but once I get back from camping, black tank will have some #2 come out when I remove the cap. Not much but any is gross.
To fix since they cannot, I added a slide gate valve at end.

I have a 2020 372RD and it does the exact same thing. Its really a pain. Especially at the dump station! Dealer says it drains just fine for them. Keystone has really dropped the ball on these. And I have filled it full with clean water and it makes no difference. The only way it drains completely is if I park up hill. It "wooshes" out then. Almost like the tanks are installed backwards and upside down. Something needs to be done. Way to many complaints.

Problem is you likely do not have sufficient volume (or static head) in the holding tank. The tank discharges on gravity flow and you need static head. To do that requires you fill the blank tank to say 2/3's full then dump with the black flush hose. What I do is meter 15 gallons of water in initially and then fill to 2/3's prior to dumping by metering with a P3 P0550 Water Meter turbine flow meter ($16 from Amazon) on the black tank flush water line.

I'm not sure if you are at a full sewer hookup site or storing black and gray. If hooked to sewer line, and you go out to drain, the black valve may not be closing all the way. I had a problem once with mine not draining well. I always use plenty of water when flushing. I had a family member change a baby in the bathroom and throw a baby wipe down the toilet. It got caught on a rough piece of fiberglass on the inside of the tank and hung just across the valve. When I went to close the valve it jammed it into the seal. you could tell the valve was not closing all the way. I had to take the valve apart to find the problem. Not a nice job. It always worked hard. When I had it apart, I noticed glue from assembly was behind the O-ring. Had to scrape that down while I was there.

There are several on YouTube. Here's one I watched a short while ago.

Just search for Keystone Factory Tour.
