Newbie Question

Just ordered my first 5th wheel a 2021 Keystone Montana ck2021 with a legacy package and the Onan ben and washer, dryer. Looking to change my Yukon Denali for a pick up with an 8 ft box, diesel, hesitating between Denali or ford Platinum
2500 or 3500. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Peter

What is the pin weight?
Extra stuff you put in the RV will add to the pin weight.
Hitch weight
Extra stuff in truck, dog, people, gas, etc

For us dry 2500 pin , hitch 150, we are already 2600, than stuff in RV and stuff in the truck. We are over the payload numbers on the door post.

Just my opinion 3500 dually. That is my next truck.

Brand is the one you like best. But go with the 350/3500.

Go drive all three pickups. Compare all of them and decide which is right for you. You will never know if you chose the best truck for you unless you know what all have to offer.
And get a one ton.

One ton dually would be best but your call on that.
Ford, Dodge, Chevy, GMC... all good. Pick the one with the bells and whistles you like most.
One ton minimum.

Any new 2500 can pull it, where it gets borderline very quickly is the pin-weight. Had I known I was going to end up with this size trailer, I would have just bought the 3500. No real difference in price. Better to have more truck than not.

Get the 450. Check the GVWR on door. You’ll be much happier towing with dually

Make sure you check the Door Pillar numbers between the 350 and 450, in some cases the 450 actually has less cargo capacity than a 350 because it is a heavier built truck.

The F450 4WD Long Bed has a payload capacity of 5,320 vs. the same configuration F350's payload of 6,530. The F450 is much heavier but the GVWRs (14,000) are the same. Check the door sticker as all this varies depending on features and options (i.e.the truck gets heavier and the cargo capacity goes down).

But boy that reduced turning radius of the F450 is sweet!

Don't forget to check the rear axle gear, regardless of brand. The various gear options can significantly change rating and fuel mileage.

Not sure if it’s still possible, but, you used to be able to order the Tow Boss option for the F350. Basically gave you an F450 front suspension with that great turning radius.

The Tow Boss option went away a while ago. I think it was a short lived option, but I don't know why it was discontinued. I would go for the DRW instead of the SRW just for that option.

With a payload capacity of 3862lbs, I believe this choice will fall short.
Driver, passenger, hitch, fuel, misc cargo all add up before even considering pin weight.

I have a 2020 GMC 3500 Denali SRW short bed with a 20K Demco slider hitch and it tows my 2020 3781 like its not even there. 41' 16,500lbs and 2700lb pin weight.

Could not be happier, 10.9 to 11.3 mpg towing and fits into a parking space LOL!!

GMC Denali 3500

When I purchased our 2020 3841FK i needed to purchase a new truck (which cost more than the Montana).
I was always a Ford guy until I drove the Denali. What sold me was the camera system and the multi-pro tailgate.
Even though it was a 3500, it rode as smooth as my F150.
I opted for the long bed so no slider hitch needed and ability to carry more items (every day use or camping).
The only thing I don’t like is the turning ratio, it is terrible with the long bed and a learning curve when it come to U turns on a highway.
I also went with SRW. Didn’t want the hassle of tearing the fenders off at a gas station or not being able to use a car wash. My 2020 GMC 3500 diesel pulls the Montana like a dream. Lots of torque and payload capacity to handle it.

If you want to be able to turn it around, go with a Dodge 2500 or 3500. Forget the foreign trucks. Remember this is America.

I don't think Nissan or Toyota was in the equation.

Its better to have the bigger truck 3500 than the 2500. Suspension better.
