Measurement between Bed and 5th wheel

I just purchased a new/ used truck and it has the Ford puck system for the hitch. I had a
B & W 5th wheel hitch and all I had to do was purchase the lower section of the hitch that goes into the Ford 5th wheel setup. I am trying to make sure that I adjusted the hitch correctly. I measured the top of bed rail and the bottom of 5th wheel and I have about 8 inches. The 5th wheel is level so I think it is correct. Not sure how tight it will get when I make a turn in uneven surface or pulling into a driveway. Any ideas how much a gap I should have?

You are doing great with that much room, most do with maybe 6 inches or less. I'm lucky to have maybe 6 inches.

Yes, compared to many you have room to spare. Just make sure your trailer is as level as possible behind you.

Quite a feat to get 8 inches and level ride, you are pretty much perfect in your setup.

I certainly agree with that.

I have much the same setup except my truck is the King Ranch. I have close to 8 inches and have no problem. I think you are fine.

Usually it is a problem of keeping the unit level and achieving the correct bed to unit clearance. I think it was recommended that you try for a minimum of six inches. Sounds like you have more than enough clearance.

My guess is a all Fords have that much space. My F450 has 8 plus inches. Perhaps there is a difference when a short bed is on the truck.

My '06 Ford F250 with the F350 suspension has more than a 6" gap. Years ago I read one should try for a minimum of 6" so I have not done anything different. Your 8" gap is PLENTY.

This still does not mean you will be good in 100% of all situations. I was once in a very hilly and mountainous campground. The site was plenty level but it had a significant drop into it. I was successful in dropping into it without making contact with the truck bed corner and fiver overhang, but I could see if I had not paid attemtion and dropped into it in either direction left or right I could have had a different story. I then used the same path to leave and had the same "whew" moment but stayed clear. Fortunately, I have been able to find sites that are more flat (we do look for that) cuz I didn't like how it went. Your extra 2" would have made it with no sweat.
