Tires for Chevy

I have a 02 chevy 2500HD 8.1 allison 410 rear end 4x4 ...I was wondering if anyone has gone from the 245's 10-ply to the 265' 16inch 10-ply tires...Does it make much difference towing? Did you have to get your speedometer calbrirated?

Not just the speedo but the tranny as well needs to be reprogrammed.
Other than a harsher ride, I doubt that upsizing will make any significant difference in towing.

Campbud,

Don't forget that the 265 tires are taller which will make your trailer front end ride higher. This has been a problem for me.

Check it out before you buy.

I looked into upsizing the tires when I replaced the OEM tires back in October. The tire shop did not recommend it as for all the reasons that Glenn already stated as well as there would not be much of an improvement in towing or handling. Just my tire guys opinion but, it was enough for me so I stayed with the factory size. So far so good.

I put Michelin 265's on my 2500HD. I used the Hypertech to reprogram the elctronics. It took care of everything EXCEPT the speedometer. Apparantly the speedometer part of the instrumentation is not driven by the DIC. Everything else like odometer and shift points were correct.

As for the tires, I really liked them. They were still on the truck when I sold it. They had 35,000 miles on them and did not look half worn. I never experienced any stability problem with them. I always inflatd them to 80psi and stillhad a good ride even when unloaded.

Bigger tires are not an option for Bubba as duallys require some minimum seperation to keep the tires from coming into contact with each other.

I have the same truck as you and I put the 265's on mine. I took it to the dealer and had them reprogram it to fit the tires. They charged me $135.00 to do it. I have not noticed any problem with the height of the Montana or with the ride. The guys at the Firestone/Bridgestone tire shop told me that the 245's were minimum for a 2500 truck and they recommended me to put the 265's on. I had the tread peal off of one of the 245's at 24,000 miles.

I put 265's on when truck was new. No problems and its been across the US 5 times and back. I've had it to Mich. 5 or 6 times with no problems. The tach and speedo are fine. If its off a bit you won't notice it. It pulls the fiver fine. I think its all in what you want in the way of ride and looks.

I put on 265 Michelins. Dealer reprogrammed speedo and trans, didn't cost very much while the truck was in for regular service. No problem for me, better weight carrying capacity for the tires, which seem to be the limiting factor on axle weight.

I just got off the phone with my Chevy Dealer. Talked to their tire specialist and here is what he said. From 245 to 265 you will get 20MM more surface on the road from the tire and it will be 1 inch higher. You will also gain 300lbs more carrying capacity per tire.

The tires will spin less. The Allison transmiission pumps by wheel revolutions, less revolutions less fluid being pumped, more heat buildup. With one size up, the speedometer error is minimal.

My rig and tv are very level, and I want to keep it that way. I don't want extra heat in the transmission so IMO there is no bang for the buck.

Just my 2 cents worth, Happy Camping!

Going to the 265/16 size created for me exactly a 3% lag in the odometer based on my test using Interstate mile markers. Odometer reading 97 miles = 100 actual. Have not had any adjustments made. So far, so good.

I posted to a similar thread just a few minutes ago. Using Excel, it came out 3.8% different on the circumference. So, your trial with mileposts was very close.
