andersen hitch

Just put an Andersen tripod hitch ie: the ultimate 5th wheel solution on and took it for a long ride. This thing is rock solid with NO noise or bucking or chucking. I have a short bed Ford 350 and I can get to what looks like 85 degrees before I got nervous about the cab. My Pull rite slider could do 90 degrees and still had 4 inches to cab but it is now officially retired. I can pick it out or install it in the bed myself at 66 years old and can connect at any degree turn. So this means 200 lbs out of the bed and 52 lbs back in. I can`t believe any one would buy the old technology now I mean this thing is just to easy to connect and unhook and it hooks to the standard rails, just pop it in and go. Got the safety chains too they just clip on pin box.

They sure get a lot of good reviews. Rare to hear anyone talk about any kind of problem with them.

I just turned 72 and put mine in and out with no problem. I like the hitch but don't like the bars in the bed of the truck. Wish I had the goose neck ball installed and got that version of the Andersen hitch. I have been to the factory as I live 100 miles form the Idaho Falls factory.

Richard .. it has three levels of adjustment. A bit over an inch each. Oh! Don't for get the safety chains, as this is considered a ball hitch is some states and they will pull you over if you don't have the safety chains. A lot of dealers don't know about the safety chains, so you have to ask. I think the MSRP is about $69.

Yes I've had it for 2yrs now and love it. I was fortunate when I traded my 2008 f250 for my 2008 f 350 dully
It had the b&w turnball hitch in it so. Have the kind where I can put the gooseneck ball in and install my hitch
And like having no rails.i love the fact that I can load and unload it myself . Have had no problems with it
Have towed around Oklahoma lakes , to Arkansas and to South Dakota and back with it ,like you said no chucking
And rock solid .my only thing is when I trade up tow vehicles I don't want the pucks I want the turnball like I have now

The Ford factory prep has the 4 "puck" holes plus a center gooseneck ball hole similar to the B&W turnover ball.

Just thinking out loud but I was wondering what might happen when the pin stress was moved forward like it is because of the adapter that is installed to support the Andersen hitch. This seems to match what might happen shown by the damage in the video link posted by WaltBennett.

The fiver pin is no longer straight down at the pin onto its hitch point, but more forward and thereby angular. Over time and with enough weight like what we have with our monster fifth wheels this Andersen setup is pretty much what happens when using an inbed adapter which is also not recommended for our fivers.

I really do like the idea of the Andersen hitch, but don't like that the pin hookup position is moved (forward) and while the hitch adapter might be strong enough, the fiver frame where the fiver hitch is assembled may not be able to compensate for this difference.

Like with many perceived clever conveniences, how lucky do you feel that it will not affect you negatively?

Andersen bucking

Just replaced my Superglide with the Andersen mounted on ISR. First trip out noticeable bucking when accelerating through a mildly bumpy intersection. Noticeable mild bumping going down the highway. Superglide was smooth as silk on same highway at highway speeds. I love being able to pull the Andersen out in a couple minutes. Lightweight frame is so nice. Not so sure about the ride quality. Regular bed Chevy one ton pulling a 3120.

Curious what you mean by "bucking". I've had zero issues with mine and love how it pulls. The pics in the linked thread are interesting though. Since there aren't other reports of similar damage I have to wonder what's going on there.

The box was mounted rear of the pin...I mount mine the opposite. What size of 5er? If the brakes aren't set correctly the more of the braking would be in the truck causing the trailer to push harder than it should into the pin which could cause that kind of damage over time. Especially with faster stops.

Bucking

Not sure I’m using the correct term to describe the movement in Truck. Basically I’m getting a rhythmic up and down bouncing in Truck that occurs when accelerating over a bump. Oscillations grow more intense until I let off the gas. Does not occur when braking. Oscillations at fixed speed on highway are very mild but noticeable. Since this is my first trip I will have to experiment a little. Model 3120 Montana.

The Andersen does put the ball about 5" behind the axle but with your one ton that shouldn't be an issue. My one ton short box handles it just fine so not sure what the issue is. Especially if you didn't have that action with the same truck but a different hitch. Doesn't really make sense that the Andersen would cause that since it doesn't move.

How old is your truck? How are the shocks? I have air bags to help mitigate bounce as well.

My Anderson hitch is about 2-3 inches in front of the axle, I have a long bed. I have never had bucking or bumping, or anything except a smooth ride. Don’t have air bags all stock rides level and works for me..

Being the original poster for this thread I have used this hitch on a SRW 350 and now a DRW 350 since Mid 2016 and have never experienced any unusual movements of the truck or camper. Just a rock solid connection with no noise. I did start to have a clicking sound on take off from a stop after about a year and just put 1/32 thick shim under one corner to stop this.
I did call Andersen after installation and asked about the off set to the rear with the SRW truck they said they said it dose not transfer weight to behind the axle because of the design. I know it looks like it would but this is what they said and I suppose they know their product. I just know I`ll never go back to a plate hitch even more so now at late 68 years old.

Andersen Hitch

2018 Z71 stock. Ball sits about 3” aft of axle. I installed the Andersen hardware on already installed ISR. Probably take in to CW and have them check my work although it seemed like a simple install. Thanks for good comments and advice. If I figure this out will post what I did to correct.

Yep you would be right after checking the bottom plate is thinner on the stock 2016 Lippert pin box than the bottom plate on the 2019 Lippert Trailair air ride pin box I just put on 2 moths ago. I also checked the thickness of the bottom plate on the Roto flex pin box that came stock with my new 2018 unit which is the one I replaced with the Trailair and they are both the same thickness but still thicker than the 2016 pin box.
Mine has not dented from the set screws, sooooo in this case size dose matter.
I got to get rid of some of this junk sitting around the garage, just sold a Reese 5th Airborne that I had for 3 years for sale, I thought I was going to have to pay someone to come over and take it and it was on Craigslist.

Sorry, Can't locate it, but I have a pic of 'why anyone would not want an Anderson Hitch..
Truck damage to Cab and Glass on SB Ram. Truck had 2000 miles... I have one now in a LB....
