Oil Information.

HI I was at work, and a fellow Dodge owner was getting his Oil changed and he told the Tech to leave the Crankcase down about 1 1/2 quarts of oil. He had been told by a service department, that if you fill it to the line on the dip stick it would blow out seals. He had the 2008 1 ton 6.7 turbo. Have any of you Dodge owners heard anything about this? By the way I had the Crank case breather service performed. At Lithia Dodge dealer in Roseburg Or. I asked them to check the suspension for the stearing arm and tie rods etc. They told me mine was ok not the one of the recalls. He did say he would like to check my ball joints that dodge is famous for eating up ball joints. Anyway thanks for your input. Later.

First I've heard of this...
I always add 12 quarts at each oil & filter change. No problems.

I would think the Cummings would know more about the engines they design and build than some guy that just bought one. The world is full of instant experts.

His '08 has the 6.7L Cummins. It holds 12 qts. When changing the oil, it needs to be warm. Let drain for about 10 minutes.

Install new filter, filled with 1 qt oil. Put remaining 11 qts of oil in engine. Start engine, ck for leaks. Shut off. Oil will read in the middle section of the stick.

Dugh? how hard is that?

I agree! Since Cummins has to stand behind warranty work on these engines, why would they put a dipstick in that had a reading that would cause them problems? I think whoever told the guy that was a quart low himself.

i actually look at it the other way around. Since Cummings obviously intended me to put in that much oil I'm not putting in less. I expect them to honor the warranty, not weasel out because I ran it short of oil.

That is what I told him, I have 70,000 on my 07 and have always put in 12 quarts. He still insisted in having only 10 quarts put in. I would like to know how cummins would react to only him having 10 quarts in his. LOl

I seem to recall from the dusty corners of my memory that there was a recall on some early 6.7's that had the wrong dipstick. Maybe that was the origin of his concern. They were all replaced or should have been.

That would explain it!

That's the procedure I follow on my 2009 6.7L turbo Cummins. Nary a problem yet!

I think what was possibly said and might have gotten thru the grape vine is that, if you don't let it drain for about 10 min to let all of the oil out, then put the recommended 12qts in, it will overfill.

My first oil change, I did just that, hot engine (always) and let it drain for 10 min and then add 12qts. Guess what, my dipstick reading was way over the mark. I had to let some oil out.

For some reason I can never add 12qts. It's always 10.5 to 11qts.

So, I guess what happened to the op was they just automatically added 12qts and the oil was overfilled and that got the rumor started, but got a little wrong thur the vine. Besides, if that were true, I would have read it on the Cummins forum. They would have had a field day with that one. Trust me!

So, just fill it to the full mark and leave it. You can sleep well tonight.

And in my Army "deuce and a half" (my "other" tow vehicle) 12 quarts would get me to half full. Six gallons (24 quarts) total for that engine!

But, it's a fun rig to drive!
