Hard shifting Ford tranny 2008 f350
Every now & then, like yesterday, in tow mode coming down the mountain, reached the bottom and took it out of Tow into regular, when it shifted into high, it shifted hard. Normal?

Mike.. Mine does something that sounds similar. Feels ike it does not want to come out of tow hual. I think we are confusing the tranny. Next time do not disengage TH but give it a bit of power. It will shift out of TH on its own..Then take it ou of TH...

Just leave it tow/haul mode. No need to take it out when you reach the bottom. I put mine in T/H when I hook up and it stays in T/H until I unhook regardless of the terrain.
.
On a similar note, my wife's Expedition shifted a little rough between 1st and 2nd. Took it to the shop (still in warranty) and told them I thought the transmission needed an adjustment. Service rep said they would probably just need to reprogram the transmission. Now that is just a little scary.

I have had hardshifting when taking it out of Tow/Haul with or without a load. I try to avoid on the fly switching of Tow/Haul unless I am on a flat ground and I think the tranny is in the proper gear. Like Richfaa mentioned I think it gets confused.
If I am towing I never take it out of TH. TH helps with shifting up and down on and off hills especially when towing a trailer. I don't think you save any fuel by turning it off, because I think the stress on the standard settings when towing a heavy load is worse than trying to save any fuel.

Although I didn’t drive very far, I noticed some hard shifting on the last camping trip we went on. I adjusted the brakes and backed off on them and it seemed to help a lot. Could it be your brakes are a little too strong when braking and possibly making it shift harder? I also leave it in tow/haul most of the time when towing.

TH stays in the gear it feels it needs to be in but at times not the gear I feel it should be in. I am sure the Computer controling the TH is a lot smarter than I am. When I get to the bottom of a hill I want to be out of TH but the tranny wil keep me there till it feels it is OK to shift out and it feels like it is holding us back. I see no difference in MPG in or out of TH. I never use TH and cruse control together as on steep grades the CC will try to keep up the set speed and cause EGT and Boost to increase to a level I do not like.

And it is a 04.. a long way from the 08's and 09's any brand. There is no issue with the tranny. He is just trying to get information on why it acts as it does and as per the intent of this forum we are attempting to help him out.... I know you were just joking but others may not see it that way. We do try our best here not to bash other brands as we all drive the best brand.
