David,
More food for thought...

Here are your axle capacities for a 3500 SRW 4x4 truck
Front axle 4,800 lbs
Rear axle 9,200 lbs

The 4x4 option is going to take away approx. 300 lbs from your towing capacities. In my opinion it is worth the trade, I feel you will enjoy the 4x4 more than the possible 300 lbs you would miss from inside your coach somewhere. =)

This is by way of testimony, not of advice. On exactly ONE occasion in the nine years we have been traveling with a fifth-wheel we could have used a 4 wheel drive vehicle. On that one occasion the park rangers got us out within 15 minutes (a quick rain shower in Manatee Springs State Park in Florida--wrong campsite for those conditions).

That means I have had nine years minus 15 minutes of not having the added expense, limitations, and potential problems of a 4X4.

This is my testimony and not intended to influence anyone else's decision. For me, where I live, and how I travel, this is the right decision. For others the choice would be entirely different.

Like padredw says, if you are careful and pick your spots you can do fine with a 4x2. I lived three years in northern Utah. The DW had a Honda and I had a Datsun (this was pre Nissan) 4x2...got stuck once, and that was in my own driveway trying to avoid shoveling snow...again.

I live in Colorado, and used to hunt in the mountains here. 4x4 was very useful then, not so much now, but I still like the confidence of having 4x4 and not having to rely on someone else to get me going if I get stuck. Also, as Mac says, you can't give a 2WD truck away here.
As for the original question, I can think of a lot better rigs than a 4x4 dually for offroad use. They are just too big and unwieldy for much use on the roads I'm thinking of. Remember, other folks use those roads, too, and you may encounter someone else back there. If you're taking up the whole road with your dually, you may both have a frustrating experience.
