2008 GMC Duramax HD -Air Filter

I have 25,000 miles on the truck and its time to change the air filter. Because of the warranty I thought I better pick up a stock air filter, so I bought one at a GM Dealer --$76.00 (ouch) for a AC Delco filter. I had no idea the filters were that expensive. Has anyone been successful with an after market air filter that meets the Duramax warranty requirements, and is less expensive than the stock GM filter. The GM Parts sales guy said the filter is expensive because it is for Duramax.

Appreciate your input.

Don't use a K&N whatever you do. Cost me a $600 dollar lesson. The oil they use gets sucked through the filter and ruins the MAF sensor. I only had mine in for three weeks before it failed. They wouldn't cover it under warranty. If you do a search on Dieselplace.com and other sites others have had trouble with them also. I now have a stock filter in and will continue to use them.

Search on line and you will find the stock filters for a lot less than what the dealer charges. I do my own maintenance and buy all my filters (oil, air, trans & fuel) that way - even the ones for my lawn mower. To make it more cost effective, I buy several at a time.

I agree with Dave about the K&N (and similar filters), but for a different reason: they don't filter as well as the stock filter does and let more dirt into your engine. If you keep your truck for 100K or less, it probably won't matter, but if you plan on getting the maximum life out of it, stick with the stock air filter.

Thanks for the info on the K&N. I have been debating about whether to get one or not for my Dodge and now I will just continue to use the stock filter. I don't know about Duramax but I buy my replacements for about $22 which is far less than the dealership.

There was an independent study done several years ago over on the Diesel Place Forum about filters, and the AC Delco came out on top of all the ones that were tested. I get all my filters from Merchant Automotive online, best prices that I have found. They are also having a 10% off filters special for the month of November if you use the promo code,"FIL10". It looks like your filter over there is only $45.00, and then another 10% off this month.

I agree - a very good price. I've dealt with Eric for a couple of years and the service is top notch.

I currently have 31,000 on my 2008 Dmax, and am nowhere near changing the filter yet. I monitor it, and the dealer has checked it. There is an indicator that lets you know when it's time, and it's still good. I don't do much driving in dust, but 25,000 seems a bit early unless you are in outback somewhere, with miles of dusty roads.

Just my thoughts.

Greatly appreciated.

That's one of those "yes, no, maybe" things. If the oil from the filter kills the MAP sensor, you are right, GM won't cover it under warranty. However the burden of proof that any aftermarket product has caused a failure is on GM. In the case of the MAP, the proof is easy, because the sensor is covered with an oily film. One of the largest manufactures of these filters, K&N blames users on over-saturating the filters when cleaning and re-oiling. For other add ons, the burden of proof is not so easy. For example, GM could have a very difficult time proving a turbo failure was the result of a reusable filter.

Don't get me wrong - I don't endorse reusable filters at all. In fact I try to educate people on their potential evil whenever possible.

I find that interesting. I installed mine new, right out of the box. Three weeks later the MAF was hosed. I checked into working with K&N to get it covered, but it appeared to be a long, drawn out process. I figured, live and learn and moved on.

The truth is you can't do better than an OEM filter. They are expensive for a reason. You get what you pay for.

AFE offers a dry filter for use with their replacement air induction system- It is reuseable by tapping the filter against a solid object to dislodge foreign material ( dead bugs, etc.) I have used this after-market system for 6 months and am pleased with the outcome so far- I am not familiar with pricing but believe I got what I paid for- JMHO- Don
