Stick house temperature

When you guys leave to snow bird,what temperature do you leave your house at up north.
PS does 50 degrees hurt plants,we have someone come and water and check out the house about every two weeks?

We set ours at 50*. The reason for 50* is that I can't move the lever to 49*.

I would also highly recommend a freeze warning system to let neighbors know if the heat goes out. A friend had something like $40,000 damage done when his furnace went out, pipes broke, basement filled with water, etc.

Step one: Drain ALL water, unless you have a hot water heating system. Oh, and turn off the water too!

Step two: heat between 47 and 50.

On Edit: Step three, or step 1.5: Pink the toilets, drains, dishwasher and washing machine.

50 degrees does NOT hurt plants,even tropicals, AS LONG AS THE HEAT STAYS ON.

A physical check of the house is a good thing, we do same, about 2 times a month.

BUT, if you freeze and then thaw during those two weeks, and your water is still on, or WAS on, you are gonna have mega damage.

Cannot stress enough, that unless you have hot water heat, DRAIN THE WATER OUTTA THOSE PIPES!

You winterize your unit, our take on it is, do the same for your stickbuilt.

In the past, we would leave our home st at 45 degrees, with a freeze alarm & a neighbor who check house twice a week.
That was Ok if we would stay in FL for a couple of months.

Now, we stay down there for 6 1/2 months! Last year was the first time we fully winterized the house. NO electric; no water; no nothing. We have the police check our home along with our daughter & the neighbors. I winterize it myself, since Im handy. No problems last winter. We save about $2,000 a winter doing this. Even the phone's are turned off.

I dont snow bird but when we leave we turn everything off, air,heat, water heater thermostat to low as she will go, close all the doors in all rooms, turn on the alarm system and go.. as you we have a family member come by every now and then to see if all is OK. cuss we dont get no snow.
BUT if I did live in an area that did freeze I would think 45 or so on the home heating, and turn off the water to the water heater along with the gas and drain it 1/4 of the way down so I didnt have to worry about a tank rupture from a freeze while I was gone.

I agree with above winterizing notes. Even if you have hot water heating there is an antifreeze you can put in the system. It replaces the water in the entire system and stays in it even while you are using the system as normal.
We do 50 degrees and alarm.

We also do 50 degrees and have a back propane system. And our Son is there 4 days a week this winter while he is in College. Next winter we will winterize and will be going West. GBY.....

I was suprised to see that our last electric bill at home was only 18.21. We left the heat on at 65 degrees, but unplugged most everything except one refrigerator. We heat the house with natural gas hot water baseboard. I have one light on in the evening as a security light for a couple hours. So far so good. Our house is in Alaska.
